Benvenuti alla Torta dei Fieschi - Welcome to the Torta dei Fieschi
The event is one of the oldest and most beautiful and evocative of the
Italian folk scene. It is from 1949 that on August 14 in Lavagna a
sumptuous historical procession in medieval costume crosses the streets
of the city and ends at the foot of the Fieschi Tower, a reconstruction
of an ancient military building now incorporated in the urban fabric of
Via Roma.
According to legend, in 1230 Count Opizzo Fiesco returned victorious
from his warlike deeds and decided to marry a beautiful Sienese: Bianca
dei Bianchi. Marriage, of love as well as interest, is celebrated with
great pomp, so as to offer the population a gigantic wedding cake.
Even today, after reading the proclamation of the wedding, the Countess
makes the "cut" of the cake: a dessert of thirteen quintals packaged by
Lavagna's pastry chefs.
From the moment of the cut the game begins where you can find a soul
mate, or at least eat a slice of cake!
As the distribution of the cake to those present begins (a crowd that,
for years, never falls below fifteen thousand people), the celebrations
in honor of the spouses Counts follow one another with moments of
spectacle recreated by the medieval characters of the event: games of
arms and Courteous duels, flag games, medieval dances and music, fire
eaters and much more.
mangiafuoco e molto altro.
