I haven’t seen that movie in such a long time that I couldn’t say if this was similar or not.
This was the first time I’ve spent time with these students outside of the classroom and my impression was that it’s not something they do often either. As you know, social interactions in Japan, especially ones that are more formal than casual, can be stiff and a little hard to navigate at times. It was really strange watching these three 50 year old adults trying to figure out how to properly address each other, make decisions together, and show respect and hospitality to each other without committing a faus pax of any kind.
Being pretty much along for the ride, I felt very much outside of the subtle drama that was unfolding around me, and that gave me this very detached, is this really happening sort of feeling.
