Durio is the name of the durian clan; belonging to the Malvaceae tribe (formerly Bombacaceae), the tribe of the Helicteroideae tribe. From about 27-30 species of this member of the clan, so far known nine species that produce edible fruit. Nevertheless, there are still many species whose fruits have not been successfully collected or well-known; and it is still possible to get another species whose fruits may be edible. Kostermans in 1958 reported the distribution of 27 Durio species: 18 in Borneo, 11 in the Malay Peninsula, and 7 in Sumatra. The study of herbarium collections at the Bogor Botanical Garden shows that in Indonesia there are at least 20 species of Durio: 18 in Kalimantan, 7 in Sumatra, and one each in Java, Bali, Sulawesi and Maluku.
