The 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake occurred at 08:58:53 UTC on December 26; the epicenter is located off the west coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake shocks ranged from 9.1-9.3 on the strength of Moment and IX (Violent) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The underwater megathrust earthquake occurred when the Indian Plate was pushed down by the Burma Plate and triggered a series of deadly tsunamis along the mainland coast bordering the Indian Ocean. Tsunami waves reaching 30 meters (100 ft) high killed 230,000-280,000 people in 14 countries and sank a number of coastal settlements. This earthquake and tsunami is one of the deadliest natural disasters in history. Indonesia is the country with the most severe impacts besides Sri Lanka, India and Thailand.
