What is Rembele??
This sentence feels foreign to those of us who first heard this phrase. Rembele is a village that is in the Sub-district Bukit Regency of Bener Meriah. The name Rembele is taken from the name of one of the many trees grow on the village of Rembele, and that was the origin of the name of the village Rembele.

Kalimat ini terasa asing bagi kita yang baru pertama kali mendengar kalimat ini. Rembele merupakan salah satu desa yang ada di Kecamatan Bukit Kabupaten Bener Meriah. Nama Rembele diambil dari nama salah satu pohon banyak tumbuh di Desa Rembele, dan itulah asal muasal nama Desa Rembele.

Beni Bantacut (1975-1982) menggagas sebuah bandar udara yang akan dibangun di Belang Bebangka, Kecamatan Pegasing tahun. Diharapkan kelak bandara ini akan mampu didarati pesawat berbadan lebar jenis boieng 737.

Lokasi bandar udara ini juga tidak lagi di Belang Bebangka, melainkan dipindahkan ke Desa Rembele, Kecamatan Bukit. Pada masa itu pemerintah menganggarkan sekitar Rp 537 juta untuk membebaskan lahan seluas 11 hektar. Landasan pacu yang direncanakan awalnya hanya 1.400 x 30 meter, namun sekarang menjadi 2.250 x 30 meter, dengan dana APBN.

Bupati Mustafa Tamy bekerjasama dengan ketua DPRD Aceh Tengah (HM. Din AW (alm)) dan jajaran DPRD Aceh Tengah lainnya, melobi banyak pihak agar pembangunan Bandar Udara Rembele segera dilaksanakan. Salah satu upaya yang ditempuh adalah menghadap Presiden Gus Dur, atas bantuan partner kerjanya yaitu menteri Transmigrasi Al Hilal Hamdi. Saat bertemu dengan Presiden Gus Dur, turut hadir pula tokoh masyarakat Gayo yang ada di Jakarta yang bernama H.Nurgaybita dan H. Wahab Rachmatsyah.

Melalui pertemuan singkat itu, Presiden Gus Dur setuju dengan rencana pembangunan Bandar Udara Rembele. Presiden Gus Dur pula yang membuka jalan untuk menemui Wapres Megawati Soekarno Putri. Selain itu, Gus Dur juga menyarankan kepada Bupati Mustafa Tamy dan panitia pembangunan bandar udara untuk melakukan studi banding ke Semarang agar bisa mengetahui teknis yang benar saat pelaksaan pembangunan Bandar Udara Rembele nantinya.

Bupati Mustafa Tamy membuat kerjasama dengan PT Dirgantara Indonesia untuk ujicoba landasan pacu Bandara Rembele, dan hasilnya pesawat CN 235 buatan PT Dirgantara Indonesia mendarat mulus pada 22 April 2003 dengan disambut tangis haru masyarakat Gayo pada masa itu. Dan Pesawat itu juga menerbangkan sejumlah masyarakat Gayo mengitari Tanah Gayo dalam uji coba landasan pacu tersebut.

Hingga saat ini Bandar Udara Rembel telah resmi dibuka dan beroperasi untuk melayani rute domestik Kualanamu-Rembele dan beberapa rute domestik lainnya..
