Dutch-style military settlement in Banda Aceh
During the colonial period, Kota Banda Aceh was designated an administrative center. Therefore, development is prioritized in the center of the city. The development of various modern means intended to support the colonial economic activities, so that gradually Banda Aceh city to grow to follow the colonial city order. The city that developed at the beginning of this century was a mixture of European (Western) forms with the local population as a result of urbanization. In the colonial period the form of residential buildings of the Dutch East Indies government officials have the characteristics of a blend of Dutch building form with a traditional house by Berlage called by Indo Europeesche Bouwkunst.
Since the beginning of the Dutch presence, cultural elements and the surrounding natural climate have been influential in building their homes in Banda Aceh. The early Dutch homes in Banda Aceh have their own arrangements that are generally similar to those in their home country. and one of them also established settlements as their place of residence both in Kuta Alam and in Neusu Jaya. The settlement in Kuta Alam stood in the late 1800s, while the one in Neusu Jaya was established in 1910.
The Dutch military settlement is on average occupied by military officers who are transferred from one area to another. This is because the government has no special place for military officials to reside. Therefore, the government took the initiative to use the mukim or dormitory left by the Dutch as the abode of military officials, so as to also maintain and preserve the integrity of the archaeological value as a historical relic
