7 Insightful Documentaries That Will Re-shape Your Worldview (with working links)

in #academia8 years ago (edited)

I am obsessed with documentaries.

If I try to watch a movie my attention quickly fades off into wonderland...But flip on a documentary, and I am intensely absorbed into the information flowing from the screen. I think my distaste for movies resides in the fact that I spend my entire day in lala-land, and watching a movie just becomes an extension of my usual fantastical thoughts. Documentaries/books provide me with down to earth information about the real happenings of the world. It's a balancing act.

Anyways, I thought I would conjure up a list of the documentaries that have fundamentally changed my worldview. Hopefully the information provided in these documentaries can be insightful for you as well. Here we go!

Citizen four

This film stunningly depicts the severely intrusive reach that the NSA has into our everyday lives. It follows the life of Edward Snowden and his fate with Wikileaks. It pokes holes into the curtain of the reality behind the current structure of the United States.

Truly remarkable journalism.

Quest for the Lost civilization - Graham Hancock

THIS is some real mind blowing shit. In this film Graham Hancock presents a case that, if true, would completely rewrite all of history as we know it. He connects the dots between the construction of ancient civilizations and the movements of the stars. He suggests, with convincing proof, that around 11,500bc there were incredibly advanced worldwide civilizations.

I think this documentary provides beautiful ideas to entertain and invokes a probing sense of wonder that calls out for further investigation.

Zeitgeist: The Movie

Zeitgeist takes you to the core of the underlying problems that plague society. From religious institutions, to financial institutions, to governmental institutions... Nothing is spared. The first time I watched this documentary I was 17 years old and 3 weeks away from leaving for bootcamp.... Needless to say, I instantly discarded the information. The ideas outlined in this documentary ultimately became the driving force behind why I decided to get out of the military.

Varanasi India: Beyond

This is the most beautifully crafted documentary about eastern spirituality that I have found. It is what sparked my interest in the study of the self. I find the idea of committing your life to solely studying yourself and your relationship to the world, an absolutely fascinating concept. I have learned valuable knowledge from the pursuit of information that has sprung from watching this documentary.

The Men Who Built America

This is a series of dramatized documentaries that provide truthful insight into the real history of America. With accurate biographical information on names like JP morgan, Vanderbilt, John D. Rockafeller, Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, Nicola Tesla, and Henry Ford.

Big names. Big Ideas. Quality footage. Clear presentation. What more can you ask for in a documentary?

Bitcoin The End of Money as We Know It

This eye opening documentary will make you rethink your long-held beliefs about money and the systems in place that espouse the message of the dollar bill. It also provides us with an alternative that is not only better, but easier, safer, and un-corruptable. Cryptocurrency. This is the film that initiated my obsession into cryptocurrency. I believe that the technology behind bitcoin (the blockchain) is the most important technological innovation since the internet. The implications of harnessing this technology are of a truly revolutionary perspective.

Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret

This film depicts a mans journey to discover what is at the core of environmental degradation and investigates why none of the top environmental organizations want to talk about it. The problem... is cattle. Or rather, the commercialization of cattle. This disgusting practice is having a serious impact on the health of us and the planet.

Unfortunately, this is the only one that you are going to have to pay for. I couldn't find a free link. BUT this is some of the most fundamentally important information that I have stumbled upon and is beyond worth the cost.

There you have it! There are many others that I think are outstanding and I will likely create more lists in the future.

Hope you enjoy.
