Popular discourse on abortion often views Republican voters as being monolithically pro-life, but there is a significant amount of diversity of views among Republicans. 31% of Republicans think abortion should be mostly legal and 6% think it should be entirely legal no exceptions. Only 13% of Republicans think abortion should be banned with no exceptions.

It is remarkable how out of step Republican legislators are with not only Republican voters, but the American public. 61% of the public think abortion should be legal in most or all cases. Only 8% think abortion should be illegal in all cases no exceptions. 73% think there should be exceptions for the mother's life. 69% think there should be rape exceptions.

Among the 37% of Americans that think abortion should be illegal in all or most cases, 46% of them think abortion should be legal if the life of the mother is at risk. Only 27% of them think it should be illegal. 36% of them think there should be rape exceptions, and only 37% think it should be illegal. 41% of them think the decision to have an abortion should belong solely to the pregnant woman.
