Frozen 2 - Movie Review
Released on November 20, 2019, Frozen 2 is the long-awaited sequel to the immensely successful Disney production from 2013.
Plot
Elsa, the young woman who learned in the first film how she could be herself as the queen of Arendelle, who is a magical queen, now leads a carefree queens' life with sister Anna, beloved Kristoff, Olaf and reindeer Sven. But then a mysterious call sounds, leading Elsa to an enchanted forest that is protected by a wall of fog. What happened there, what does it have to do with Elsa's own magic powers and what dubious role did Elsa's grandfather play in that history?
So it's time for an enlightening quest, which Elsa must largely undertake separately from Anna and the others. Meanwhile, Kristoff tries time and again to ask Anna to marry him.
Review
Frozen 2 has not become a repeat exercise : rather a very pleasant reunion with directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and voice interpreters Idina Menzel (Elsa), Kristen Bell (Anna), Jonathan Groff (Kristoff) and Josh Gad (Olaf). Composer Christophe Beck returned with an inspired soundtrack and the catchy songs were again written by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Especially Into the Unknown , the obvious descendant of Frozen- hit Let It Go , buzzes through your head afterwards.
In terms of animation, Frozen 2 surpasses its predecessor. Everything looks beautiful, from the forest and the rock giants to Elsa's ice horse galloping across tidal waves. The snow crystal always returns as a basic structure: note the window on the back of a particularly cute fire lizard. Elsa, Anna and co move, sing and dance even more lifelike than before.
It's great that Jennifer Lee's script does not produce an obstinate villain, that the film tackles sensible existentialist themes - the responsibility that one generation has to give to the next, and even climate change is in - and that there is room for a moving death scene.
It's just a shame that everything is resolved and corrected so easily in the last act. Frozen 2 lacks the emotional weight that the film could have had, but that does not detract from the delight and charm that once again emanate from this wonderfully icy wonder world.
