The downs of location portrait photography shoots
A month or so ago a woman contacted me about doing a photo shoot for today
We set it up then this past week the weather forecast starting showing thunderstorms so I had to contact my client to figure out something else. She is about to head out of state for a Family reunion and there is rain in the forecast for the next few days. But she really wanted to get these done before the trip so she suggested the closed mall. Our Mall closed in April the movie theater is still open so there is still access inside the mall so people can get into the theater. About an hour before the shoot time. The rain slowed to a sprinkle then stopped but it was cloudy and the radar said the rain was going to break any minute, but there is a really nice spot behind the mall with a nice tree line and some smaller pine trees that make for a great back ground.
So I suggested to the client that if we hurry
That we might be able to get some shots outside with the nicer outdoor background instead of the grayish blue wall of the mall or the brick wall. Though I did want to do some of the brick wall background shots too. Once we walked out of the mall it started sprinkling, but it wasn't so bad, that I thought we could at least get some of them done outside. We decided to drive closer so if it started we could get to cover quickly. As I was walking back to my car to drive over I said a little prayer to please let the rain hold off so I could get this shoot in. And something happened in the 45 seconds it took to drive across the lot closer to the tree line. It stopped raining even though radar showed it was pouring, it was completely dry where we were at.
We did most of the photos outside
Then went back inside the mall to do the brick wall background. Sometimes I am not so lucky with the weather and the rain totally rains us out. But today it all worked out. That is the ups and downs really of location portrait photography is dealing with the unpredictable weather. But sometimes even when the weather is horrible we catch a break in the rain and can get the job done. I didn't ask permission to share the photos I took today, and I don't share photos of clients without their permission. Because sometimes photos are meant as a surprise and the internet can give away surprises.
What was even better
When I got home and started editing the photos this family was so photogenic all I really had to do was center and crop the photos. So it didn't take me very long at all. I hope the weather changes cause I am suppose to have some more photo shoots this week and right now the forecast may end up rescheduling them. I can't wait to have a studio space. So I can offer in studio photos along with outdoor location shoots that I offer now. I plan to convert a Amish Barn into a studio once I have the funds saved for it. Something like this building
This building is a Mayse Mfg. Co. Outdoor Products I do not own the rights to this photo and am using it just to show my readers the kind of building I am considering I am using this photo under fair use
I like this set up because of the porch
But also for the barn style double doors on nice days they can be opened for natural light instead of studio lights. The porch will make some great photos too. I have a cute Coca-Cola table and chair set that would fit perfectly on that porch and make a great photo prop. I can also shut the barn style double doors for a rustic barn background. When I finally get it set up, I can gonna have a green screen so I will be able to have unlimited background choices no matter the weather. I really am looking forward to the day when I have enough saved to get the shed and start making it a studio.
It probably does depend on the photographers reputation because I work with my friend who is pretty big and expensive so it’s more an honour to be chosen by her

I want to remain affordable for families that can not afford the expensive photographers. I am fine averaging $10-$15 an hour for my time for the shoot and editing. I know many would say I am stupid but I didn't have many professional shots of my kids when they were growing up because I couldn't afford it. Then finally when I could they were nearly grown and I got into photography. I want to help low income families afford photos of their kids and family photos. I know many who don't have any professional shots of their kids or families because they can't afford them. Even school photos they can't buy.
That’s great!! I do some photos for friends and charge less too. The ones who hire me are less likely to afford expensive photographers too and they also are more picky with sharing sometimes. I guess family photos are more sensitive

When it comes to peoples children I am careful with international sharing. My local business page is likely to be seen locally not internationally. So I also get permission to share their photos in my blog. But I do occasionally. I actually don't think mom would mind, but they left to go out of town so I decided not to bother them on vacation.
Yes children are a bit more sensitive. I agree, should ask permission for those

That is a cool location for a shoot, I hope the weather is good for you upcoming shoots
When I have no shoots schedule the weather is nice as soon as I have work it rains. LOL That is how it has been this last month for me.
@tecnosgirl seems Nature is against us this season, not that I do portrait shots but the rare times I have had to get out for photo walks over the last few weeks rain always comes in so I can relate
Speaking of nature I need to get out for some nature photography and old buildings
@tecnosgirl good luck with that :)
Woohoo! I love it when that happens! Didn’t know you were a photographer too! Awesome! Look forward to seeing some of the shots!!

Oh I just saw you said you didn’t ask for permission. Here we get our clients to sign a contract that says the photos rights are ours to share, and most people know that a photographer will share their shots online to promo their business.

I own the rights as a photographer but I always ask before blogging. But not to show it on my business page as all photos become part of my work to show as it with all photographers but I always ask permission before sharing them on my blog. Some would rather I not blog about their shoot and I respect that.
Ah interesting! Over here it’s normal and even encourages to blog or post photos after a shoot unless they request otherwise

And some clients are even sad if their shots weren’t chosen to be published haha
