Is STEEM "Made In America"?
I recently saw that @officialcmc has a category of token for Made in America. Of course, the first thing I had to do was to look for STEEM in the list. It's not there☹️ (unless I missed it).

So my question is, "Should it be?".
- Steem was launched by American founders and an American firm (but, apparently, with international funding)
- As far as I know, Steemit, Inc - Steem's dominant minority investor has always been headquartered in the United States.
- If we look at web users, most site visits seem to come from the US.
; however - Although I believe that Steemit is still an American firm with a US headquarters, it has been structurally under a @tronfoundation umbrella since 2020. The Tron Foundation is not a US firm.
- If we look at the active content creators, we have to suspect that the majority are not American.
- STEEM's exchange access in the US is extremely limited.
- It's not clear to me how many of Steem's witnesses (if any) are in the US.
There are rumors that the new administration in America is considering substantial tax advantages for tokens that are made in the USA, so this question may be about more than just "bragging rights".
In the 1990s, I worked for BTNA, which stood for "British Telecom North America" until they were purchased by MCI. As I understand it, this is analogous to the relationship between Steemit and Tron. Obviously, BT was British, but BTNA was an American subsidiary. To the best of my knowledge, BTNA was always considered as an American corporation.
Therefore, my personal opinion is that points 1-3 outweigh points 4-7, and the STEEM token should qualify for the Made In America list. It was clearly "Made in America" when it launched, and its largest influencer (with a substantial minority of stake) continues to be an American firm.
What do you think?

Another perspective to consider might be where tokens were/are created, i.e. the location of servers that mined the original tokens (or maybe the nationality of the owners of the accounts?) and the location of the witnesses that have added the coins to the ecosystem.

Yeah, I alluded to that in point #7. That's probably the strongest case for excluding STEEM from the list. But, a comparison case is Litecoin, which is included in the category. As with Steem witnesses, there's probably no way to tell where most LTC coins are produced at any given time, so I guess LTC was classified according to its founder.
Not sure if @officialcmc documented their inclusion criteria anywhere, but I haven't spent any time looking.

I wasn't thinking so much about the current witnesses, but more historically. I would guess that the bulk of the mined Steem and a lot of the early-witnessed Steem was done in the US.
There's probably no way to verify, but historically I think a lot of "witness statements" included info about where they claimed to be running servers.

True. Also, a substantial portion of new coins go to authors and curators. Before 2020 (in times of higher inflation rates), a large chunk of those rewards probably also went to US residents. I don't have the exact numbers handy, but I'd guess that somewhere around 75% of all tokens were created before 2020.
