Welcome to this week steem for better health program, this week we will be talking about CONSTIPATION.

In this program we will know what constipation is, possible causes and of course how to manage it with natural remedies.

This topic was sent to me by a steemit user, She asked me to write on this topic that it may be interesting to other users. I appreciate her so much and I promise to do just that, after my research and some survey in this topic I decided to write it out today.

WHAT IS CONSTIPATION?

To define constipation we will do it together, now let's go.

  • Have you ever find it difficult to defecate for about 3 and more days?

  • Have you ever sit on your toilet seat for about 3 to 4 hours forcing yourself to excrete but find it difficult to do so?

  • Have you ever pass out a very hard stool after some hours of struggling, you end up tearing your anus?

If yes is your answer that means you know what Constipation means.

Constipation is the common digestive problem which makes a person have hard bowel movement or finds it difficult in passing out stool everyday it could take upto or more than 3 days or more.

Constipation is very common in our locality and it is as well very easy to control if you pay attention to your diet and pay attention to your body system as a whole.

But then irrespective of this things there are other causes of constipation. It could be some underlying health conditions or some current conditions of a person and some are even caused by some medications. Some home remedies can treat this let's look into this together.



SYMPTOMS OF CONSTIPATION

Everyone have different bowl habits which makes the normal length of time varies in person. Some people do go for 3 times or more in a day, while others may go 3 to 4 times in a week. Then not start after 3 days you are still will likely be very hard and more difficult to pass does it may cause some injuries on the anus or causes haemorrhiod due to excessive staining.

Whatever your own case may be the symptoms of constipation includes;

  • Passing very hard or dry stool.

  • Straining or having pains with blood stains during bowl movement.

  • Passing less than 3 bowel movement in a whole week.

  • Bloating and cramps

CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION

To arrive at the courses of constipation, let us look the bowel movement process in the body.

Colon does great work when it comes to digestive system. When we eat food our body absorb the nutrients and water needed leaving behind the waste. While the waste passes through the digestive system, colon absorbed water, nutrient and electrolyte to create waste and sent to rectum . Then the colon muscles will eventually remove this waste through the rectum but if by para venture the stool remains in the columns for a longer time, it will become very hard and difficult to pass this, this result too constipation.

Now what could be the possible cause that will make the waste to remain in a colon for a long time? Let's find out

  • Poor diet
  • Stress

  • Dehydration

  • Change of environment/ routine

  • Medication e.g antidepressants, antihistamines, iron pills, antacids, diuretic.

  • Delaying the urge to poop

  • Pregnancy

  • Underlying health issues e.g intestinal obstruction



NATURAL REMEDIES

From this causes, you can see that the common ones are from our lifestyle therefore, you need to adjust to whatsoever lifestyle you are living to avoid constipation.

Let's take for example;

  • Food; we eat food everyday and as such we need to pay attention to what we eat, like consuming more of fibre rich foods which include fruits, vegetables, grains and cereals etc.

  • Water; stay hydrated at all times to help your body have enough fluid that is required in a day so as to be able to absorb some and send out some.

  • Caffeinated drinks; avoid all forms of caffeinated drinks as it causes dehydration thus, leading to constipation.
  • Do not resist the urge to have a bowel movement because the longer you stay, the harder your poop will become.

  • Exercise

PREVENTION

In every disease, there is always a way of prevention.

  • You need to adjust to your eating habits such as increasing the quantity of fruits, vegetables and grains in your meals.

  • Eat rich high fibre foods and you can even confirm from your healthcare professional about taking fibre supplements. Please note this should be prescribed by your healthcare professional before taking it.

  • Drink enough water, regular exercise then finally, train your muscles to have a bowel movement at the same time of a day.

Please note that constipation may be easy to some people, but then it is not easy. Hemorrhoid is caused by constipation and hemorrhoid is such a painful condition I'll talk about it subsequently in this program. So in other for you not to have hemorrhoids please take this preventative measures to prevent constipation.

Many are suffering from this indigestion problem called constipation due to lack of knowledge on the kind of food to consume. Through this article, I have learned more about constipation, its causes and remedies. I also know about one natural remedy for this problem and it works perfectly; drinking lemon water;

Slicing lemon into a bottle of water, allowing it for 30 minutes to an hour before drinking helps a lot.

I have a question please;
Can constipation lead or cause pile disease?
I would like to know more about the consequences of this particular problem (constipation) when not treated or when the remedies are being ignored.

Thank you for your good comment, I appreciate it. Your lemon water is good as the fiber content in the citrus helps in digestion and easy flow of bowel.

I've mentioned it already in the post that severe straining of the anus leads to haemorrhiod

The medical name for pile is haemorrhoid.

I will talk about this haemorrhoids in one of my series.
