How to Guide a Non-Technical Colleague Transitioning into a Developer Role?steemCreated with Sketch.

Recently, I've encountered a rather challenging situation at work. A new colleague has joined our department, but he previously worked in marketing and is now transitioning to our development team. The management has assigned me as his mentor to provide him with learning guidance and assist him in coding tasks.

To be honest, his progress has been quite slow, and he often forgets the concepts we've already covered. I’ve suggested that he document what he learns and make use of AI tools to support his learning process. I also encourage him to ask questions whenever he encounters something he doesn’t understand. However, as he doesn’t have a technical background, cross-disciplinary learning has been quite difficult for him.

As a developer, I'm not a professional instructor, and I can only teach him through practical examples, showing him our development workflow and explaining the systematic steps of software development. However, his foundational knowledge is extremely limited, which requires me to teach him step-by-step. This has made me feel somewhat inexperienced in how to guide him effectively.

Has anyone ever faced a similar situation or mentored a new team member like this before? I’d greatly appreciate it if you could share your experience or suggest some effective methods to help me tackle this challenge. Thank you!

Hi, moving to develooment department could be a hard task to achieve, but nothing that he can’t do, just need to pay attention to the area for some time, make courses and that.

he can do my basic programming course:

all other lessons are in the tag #devwithseven.

if you need more help don’t hesitate to let me know!

Our team is primarily engaged in full-stack development. I usually work with the Vue framework on the front end, combined with Java and Spring Boot on the back end for web development. For new colleagues, the lack of systematic training makes it relatively challenging to get up to speed. Moreover, the company doesn't allow much time during office hours for learning, so they have to rely on self-study after work. However, based on my observations over the past few days, he hasn't shown much initiative in self-learning.

It sounds like in school when you teach children who just starting their first journey into the world of computer. It is not really easy to teach people and when it is about computer program and functions it is even more difficult.

It will be interesting how your journey will develop.

By the way, here on Steemit we have a Tech club, I am leaving this link check up if you might find it interesting:
