My Son, My Son

"My son. My son. Your bravery is glorious. Your death only a truly great soul can achieve. You fought for what you believed to be right. As a soldier it was your duty. The politics were not something you measured. It was simply your duty to fight even though we were under Russian rule for the last hundred years. You remained faithful to your sense of duty."

"But now, Oh my son, you've been killed and your body thrown into the river. You have left me alone in my old age. Who will take care of me? Fix the roof, get my medicines, sit with me and let me hold you and remember your childhood antics. You were so beautiful. And a good child. A bit naughty at times, like when you got the neighborhood boys together to raid Herra Viraten's apple orchard. You didn't take that many apples, just enough for you and your friends to nibble that afternoon. He was very angry but when he saw you and the boys smiling with half eaten apples he had to laugh. But he warned you not to do this again. Saying, " How will I support my family if I have no apples to sell in the market?" You looked down and felt ashamed. What did a six year old know about selling in the market?"

"Oh My son. Your body has been thrown into the River Tuonela which flows down into the lower planets. But I have retrieved it. I see the messenger of Ukko in the form of a bee carrying a special honey that will release you from death."

"This is all so wonderous. The world is a place of miracles."

This is based on the backstory for the painting according to Wiki. I hope my embellishment of it does not fall into the category of plagiarism. I simple wanted to present some enactment of what might be going on. And maybe capture an emotional dimension.

"Painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela, depicting a scene from Kalevala, a Finnish epic poem. The warrior Lemminkäinen had been killed, his body hacked to pieces and thrown into the dark river that flows through the underworld, Tuonela. His mother, having collected the parts from the river and sewing them back together, looks up to see a single bee bringing back honey from the halls of the god Ukko, a wondrous ointment that would bring her son to life."
