Maybe you already know SETI (The search for extraterrestrial intelligence) and the offspring Seti@home that was invented in 1999 and is distributing the resource hungry search to a lot of volunteers located all around the globe.

The method that was invented back then is nowadays used for a lot of cutting-edge science projects and is commonly using BOINC (The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing) as a service.
