| Topic of the Post | Bybit, a centralized crypto exchange, was hacked last week. Hackers stole about $1.4 billion in Ethereum and Ethereum-related assets. This was around 70% of Bybit’s Ethereum reserves. The market reacted by selling cryptos and moving to stablecoins. Rumors spread, but the exchange’s CEO and social media team confirmed the facts. The hack was limited to Ethereum wallets. Attackers targeted the multi-sig cold wallet while transferring funds to the hot wallet. This news caused the market to drop. Cryptos lost between 1% to 10% in a single day. Many users started withdrawing funds. Other exchanges are monitoring the situation to prevent hackers from selling stolen funds. Bybit is using OTC Ethereum purchases to reduce market volatility. If the exchange handles this well, investor confidence may return. Despite the massive loss, the exchange reassured users that all funds would be fully compensated, maintaining trust in its platform. To aid in fund recovery, Bybit introduced a bounty program, offering 10% of recovered assets potentially up to $140 million to cybersecurity experts and blockchain analysts.
