Nissi Beach - the nicest beach in Europe?

People say Nissi beach in Ayia Napa, Cyprus is one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe. Many newspapers and websites describe it as a paradise, which you cannot skip while vacationing on the island. But is it really as stunning as they claim?

Cyprus is a small country with only 1.35 million citizens and almost four million tourists per year. With such an enormous number of visitors and tourism being the most important source of income for locals, it's no surprise that the government invests heavily in advertising. And they do it very well, promoting the island in every possible way, especially on platforms and media that target nationalities already fond of visiting for the sun, white sand, and delicious souvlakis. These visitors are mostly from Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Romania), nearby Israel, and the UK—because Brits are everywhere, and Cyprus is no exception :)

The island is indeed beautiful, with many stunning beaches, though most of them are artificial. Sand had to be imported; otherwise, people would have to relax on the marvelous but less comfortable rocks and grass.

One of the largest beaches in the region, now surrounded by hotels, is Nissi Beach. "Nissi" in Cypriot Greek means "island," and the name comes from the small island located about 100 meters from the coast. This island can be visited by everyone, even if you don’t know how to swim. You simply walk through the water, much like Jesus did—though unlike Him, you’ll likely get wet. Depending on the day, the water may reach your ankles or even your knees, but the risk of drowning is minimal (unless you’re very drunk, which, unfortunately, happens among tourists here sometimes). Worst-case scenario? You might lose your phone while trying to take photos of the small fish swimming around your feet, only to drop it when your boyfriend unexpectedly asks what time it is—as happened to my partner.

The island is tiny but charming. It has a small beach on the northern side and a tiny hill with lovely rock formations on the south. Some boats are docked here, tempting tourists with water sports at relatively low prices (though, as I now live in Norway, everything outside my country seems relatively cheap to me—so don’t take my word for it, Google the prices and decide for yourself).

The water is crystal clear, the waves are almost non-existent, the sand is white, and the beach is clean. It’s a great place for those who don’t know how to swim, as you can easily walk along the sea for 500 meters, with the water reaching only your belly button or chest (depending on whether you’re built like a basketball player or Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones).

The infrastructure around the beach is excellent too. You’ll find plenty of sunbeds to rent (look for the municipal ones, as they’re much cheaper and just as comfortable), restaurants, bathrooms, showers, and more. Just be prepared for higher prices compared to other places on the island. The beach’s fame comes with an additional cost. If you’re a budget-conscious traveler, here are some tips: for the showers, which are extra here, you can walk to the next beach and rinse off the salt for free. To eat cheaply, head to the local supermarket just 300 meters away—it’s worth the short walk unless you don’t mind paying €25 for a small burger. If that’s the case, you might as well visit the Canary Islands instead ;)

Now, for the less pleasant side of Nissi Beach. Like any spot that gains international fame, the beach gets crowded. And when I say "crowded," I mean there are more people on this one beach than on four or five equally beautiful beaches nearby. Early mornings or the time after sunset are the best options to visit during peak season (the summer temperatures allow for swimming even in the middle of the night), but I wouldn’t recommend going in the middle of the day unless crowds don’t bother you. I’m somewhat antisocial when I’m at the beach, so I prefer much calmer spots.

I’m curious about your opinions. Have you ever been to Nissi Beach? What do you think of the place? If you haven’t visited yet, what’s the best beach you’ve been to so far? Leave a comment—you might inspire someone with an idea for their next summer holiday destination.

No I never been to Nissi Beach. I heard about this beach today in your post. No doubt it is a very beautiful beach. If I get a chance I will travel here. I have been to the longest unbroken sandy beach in the world which is Cox's Bazar beach. It is located in my country Bangladesh.

sounds interesting. Is the water warm enough whole year to swim in there? Or is it rather the place for picnic and meet up with the friends?

No, the water of Cox's BazaSea Beachch is not warm enough to swim in comfortably throughout the entire year. Temperature drops significantly from November to February.
