Mount Northcote, Snowy Mountains, Australia
New South Wales is the most populated state of Australia with vivid landscapes, from hundreds of famous beaches, rain forests, and the snowy peaks of the high country. I love this state for its diverse attractions that offer something to a nature enthusiast, a culture lover, or a walker like me.
The name Alps has nothing to do with the Alps but is just to give a general characteristic or idea of massiveness and of being snow-clad for five to six months each year during the peak of Australian winters.
The Snowy Mountains are the highest on the Australian continent, reaching approximately 2,230 meters at Mount Kosciuszko, and the timberline lies at 1,500 meters.
The Snowy Mountains are partly located in New South Wales, which is the state's highest mountain range and ski field. I have visited this place from Sydney and Canberra during the months of May and June when the winter is at its peak and the area experiences snowfall.
Bordering the Australian Capital Territory, the region extends from Tumut southwards through to Lake Eucumbene, the largest man-made reservoir. Then we move towards the holiday resort town of Jindabyne, on the shores of Lake Jindabyne.
Most of the Snowy Mountains region is covered by the Kosciuszko National Park, covering a large area of more than 700,000 hectares. I was there at the end of May,2023.
This park is another attraction of this area, with Mount Kosciuszko, the highest peak in Australia, having several lakes and beautiful waterways, including the Snowy River.
The four best attractions for the visitors to this area are ski resorts in the Snowy Mountains, like Thredbo, Perisher, Charlotte Pass, and Selwyn Snowfields. These all are generally full of snow between June and October, but occasionally the snow starts falling at the end of May itself.
Although the Snowy Mountains attract visitors year-round, most people visit the scenic mountains during peak winters from May through August and enjoy horse riding, mountain bike riding, boating, fishing, and bush walking.
The town features all the commercial facilities and attractive parkland. Cooma is a handy base for exploring the attractions of the Snowy Mountains, including the resort town of Jindabyne, located minutes away, and the region's snowfields and mountain villages.
The town of Cooma in the Snowy Mountains is the major place where the best facilities are available for tourists.
These are some of the best places for tourists:
Cooma Motor Lodge
Alpine Hotel
Kinross Inn
Sovereign Inn
Nebula Motel
White Manor Motel
Tourists can hire snow equipment through various rental agencies. I suggest you rent gear instead of purchasing it unless, of course, you are a resident of this area or a frequent visitor.
With a wide range of and various types of mountain gear available in these rental shops, you can get the right equipment. Besides, buying something that doesn't suit your skill level or weather conditions will be a waste of money.
By the way, you should ask your resort where you have a staying arrangement, as all resorts have their ski and other gadget hire facilities according to which sports you are interested in.
I also suggest you go for a lesson with a qualified instructor because a professional coach will teach you the proper techniques that will help you build confidence.
Note-
Best time to go: May through August
Resorts booking available online.
