Education Map #2 - "University of Uyo, Town Campus"

Introduction

Greetings to all distinguished Steemians and most especially @miftahulrizky for bringing up this contest Education Map #2 - Mark Your School on Steem Atlas so as to enable us showcase strategic places to the world and in the process contribute to the @pennsif Steem atlas project. Today, I will be writing about an institution of higher learning. University of Uyo, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

The University of Uyo is a federal university which is located in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria and was established in the year 1991 about four years after the birth of the state. It is essential to mention that most of the structures and facilities of the school are older than the name of the school and this is as a result of the school evolving from the University of Cross River State which earlier founded in the year 1983.

Just for record purpose, The University of Uyo operates on a multi-system compus comprising of three different campi strategized at different positions in the state. We have The University of Uyo, Town Campus at Ikpa Road, The Annex Campus at Ikot Ekpene Road, The Ime Umanah Campus, Ediene, College Health Science, Abak Road and the University of Uyo Permanent Campus at Nwanniba.

These Campuses collectively houses 17 faculties, a school for continuing education as well as a Post graduate school which enables the smooth running of undergraduate and post graduate programs. This post will be focusing on the University of Uyo Town Campus which is located at Ikpa Road , Uyo.

The University of Uyo's Town Campus which is located at the heart of the town serves as a vital hub for series of academic activities coupled with administrative services. This campus houses several departments ranging from Pharmacy, Education, Social Science, Allied Science, Nursing Science, Faculty of Arts, Continuing Education, and Social Science. This faculties on their own comprises series of departments under them and notably includes;

Under Education we have the following departments:

Science Education	Educational Technology	Educational Foundation	Early Childhood	Educational Psychology	Curriculum Studies	Physical and Health Education etc

Under Faculty of Arts we have the following Departments:

Communication Art	History	English	Linguistics and Nigerian Languages	Music	Philosophy	Religious and cultural	Theatre Art	Modern Language

Under Pharmacy we have only one department and that is the Department of Pharmacy

Under Faculty of Social Science we have the following Faculties;

Economics	Political Science and Public Administration	Sociology and Anthropology	Psychology

I will be dropping the school official website for more information in regards the different programs run in the school both in under graduate and post graduate level.

NOTABLE FACILITIES IN THE SCHOOL

University of Uyo Town Campus is a home for different facilities which include though not limited to the following; under Games

A football pitch	A Basketball pitch	A Volleyball court	Handball Pitch	and Lawn Tennis Court to mention but a few

University of Uyo has a near standard football pitch with a spectator stand capable of containing 5,000 students. This football pitch is mostly used by students in playing inter faculty competition, departmental competition and even the normal friendly football matches. The surrounding of the pitch is always marked and used for track events. Notable competitions such as the Vice Chancellor's Cup and SUG tournaments are also held here coupled with series of inter universities games.

Around the axis of the football pitch is another interesting game pitch, The volleyball's court. University of Uyo has two volley ball's courts which are allocated about the same location. These volley ball's courts are near standard and are often used for interschool volleyball's competitions. Due to how serene the environment is, Lecturers including the Dean of students comes in to play with the students.

The Basketball pitch is adjacent to the Volleyballs court and just like the volley balls court, the basketball pitch is also a near standard pitch used by students and lecturers to play interesting basketball games. The court is always renovated on a yearly basis and this shows how valuable it is to students who love basketball.

The lawn tennis Court and the Handball Pitch on the other hand has suffered greatly due to the lack of interest in playing the game. Students who plays the game are few so the pitch is mostly left lonely while the other pitch are being used on a daily basis.

Under Basic Amenities, we have the following facilities

Good water at strategic positions	A power supply plants and Lester Engines	Male and Female Hostel	An hostel for post graduate students	Good Rest rooms scattered around	Relaxation spots in all departments etc

The University of Uyo cares about the total well-being of her students and this is evidence in their provision of basic social amenities. To add value to it, these amenities are located at strategic positions so as to enhance maximum usage and convenience. With this, it is normal to see water at almost every corner and sit out in the department.

The school owns about four Lester Engines which takes turns in ensuring that the students enjoys a steady power supply especially whenever there is a PHED seizure. To be precised, students who stays on campus commends the school for this as they enjoy a steady power supply with minimal charge which forms part of their school fee.

Taking cognizant of people who may be coming from distance places to school in Uyo or people who do not want to come from home so as to avoid certain disturbances as they focus on academics, the school administrators made provisions for female and male hostels which is duly furnished with bunks and foams for students. In addition to this, each of the rooms has its own reading center for students to gather and read mostly at night. This is also applicable to the post graduate students.

The strategized convenience centres (rest rooms) is what I would not want to skip as it plays a very vital role in the total well-being of students around the university community. I addition to the rest rooms are comfortable relaxation centers located outside all departments in University of Uyo Town Campus.

UNDER NOTABLE BUILDINGS, WE HAVE;

Onyeama Ogochuchu multipurpose Hall	CBN Hall	Modernized NEDU Block	Center for Cultural studies Block	Common wealth Block	Educational Technology Room	Different Banks	Pharmacy Ultramodern Laboratory block etc

The Onyema Ogochuchu Hall is a large building located at the heart of the school and is always used for indoor events such as conferences, academic debates, student shows, departmental and faculty summits etc. it is also used for school meetings and orientation programs where at least a thousand people are needed in attendance. This hall is well furnished with it rest rooms and water facilities. It shares similar characteristics with the CBN Hall and NEDU Block except for the fact that the CBN Hall and NEDU block are also used for lectures and Examination purposes.

The center for Cultural studies happens to be the oldest building in the school and it houses the highly delicate information and resources of the school. Though I have not entered this building before, information holds that it looks like a semi museum for the University of Uyo, Town Campus students.

The Educational Technology Room and Ultra Modern Pharmacy laboratory are two buildings located about the same location and as their names entails, they are used for technological presentation and as well as laboratory experiments majorly to the good people of Education and Pharmacy respectively. Meanwhile, permit me to present the Pharmacy faculty as an evolution of Science Faculty. This is true has the current faculty of pharmacy was initially used by the faculty of Science, mathematics department to be precised.

OTHER BUILDINGS AND FACILITIES INCLUDE

The Nyong Essien Library	The Students Union Quarter	Convocational park business center	Administrative Blocks across all Faculties	Gender Resource Center	Micro teaching laboratory etc

The Nyong Essien Library is a well modernized Library comprising of both a local library and an electronic library. It was donated by Nyong Essien and that births the name Nyong Essien Library. It comprises of a discussion center, all units that a standard Library should have, well furnished shelves stocked with books and a centre for research etc. the Serene environment coupled with the good services from the library attendants are what really makes it to stand out with composure.

The Students Union Quarter is a region owned by the school yet, governed by the students. It is where the students issues are being discussed and appropriate decisions are made in regards the students' total well-being and other students' related issues. Another useful facility is the convocational park. This name stems from the fact that this place was always used for convocation prior to the building of a 1000 capacity hall at University of Uyo Permanent Campus. Currently, this place used by computer personnel whose work is to help students in all online registrations while getting their charge.

Administrative Blocks are another essential component of the school and it is a building which connects the students to the managements. There play vital roles in signing and approving students' documents as well as serving as a connector linking students to the Vice Chancellor's and other higher bodies in the department. It is worthy to mention that all departments as an administrative office which is answerable to the faculty admin which inturns is answerable to the school administration. Gender Resource Center and Micro teaching laboratory are not to be left out. They play significant roles in moulding students as well as enabling students of education faculty to practice what the have been taught in classrooms.

In addition to the aforementioned, The University of Uyo Town campus is a multi entrance institution and this plays vital role in reducing traffic. Also, all entrances are highly secured with security personnel who ensures that students are duly checked before entering the school. The school mini markets, decorative flowers and well planted trees are what makes the school even more appealing for learning to take place. Before I end the session, permit me to acknowledge the ultra Modern classroom blocks, and lecture theaters which enhances adequate academic activities.
