Three people were killed and another 20 wounded after a police-hijacked vehicle hit the victims on Friday in Melbourne, Australia, in a lawsuit that police denied was a terrorist attack.

Police said a man was arrested after the incident, which occurred in a corner of the city center.

"We believe it is linked to a stabbing that occurred earlier in the southern metropolitan region," Victoria Police interim commander Stuart Bateson told a news conference.

The police spokesman explained that the inmate had driven the vehicle in circles near the Flinders Street train station before moving on to the mall on the corner of Burke and Queens streets where the incident occurred.

Emergency services were attended by 20 people, including one child.

A witness told local media he saw the driver of the car speeding up the engine before hitting people on the street, and others said they heard shots, but that information was not officially confirmed.

"He drove a red car and shouted," Stefano Pavan told Channel 9, stating that the driver also "waved to the police from inside the vehicle."
