Let's Write: Grasshoppers - Fun Facts About Grasshoppers & Story
Introduction
When we were little kids, for those of us who lived near gardens and bushes, we often see grasshoppers on leaves, flying and hanging around.
I usually go up to them and try to catch it, unplug the long legs and build sand houses for them along with my Friends.
Childhood is fun. I wish to share about this insect with you. Grasshopper is an insect with long back legs,
that can jump very high and that makes a sound with it's legs.
Grasshoppers
Grasshopper is a group of insects belonging to the caelifera. They are among the most oldest living group of chewing herbivorous insects with powerful hind legs.
Like the name implies, herbivorous chewing insects, grasshoppers feed mostly on greasses. Some of them can change colour due to the environment they find themselves. Just like other insects, grasshoppers have predators which ranges from, ants, lizards, geco to birds and humans.
Roasted mature grasshoppers are very tasty and crunchy. You can try it out.
Fun Facts About Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers are shy. They don't like people getting close to them. So, whenever they see a person or a predator coming they hop, jump or fly inside the bush.
Grasshoppers have glossy eyes. These eyes help them to sense danger and navigate while flying. It also makes them look beautiful.
They have powerful hind legs. These legs help them to jump a distance of about 1meter without using it's wings. Grasshoppers are the only insects that can still live and some even fly without thier hind (back) legs.
Grasshoppers are colourful. Grasshoppers have beautiful wings which coat them. They scent nice when are roasted in fire.
Why I Like Grasshoppers
- I like grasshoppers because they help me eat up the weeds in the garden.
- Grasshoppers are pro flyers. They hatch from little eges yet, after some days, you can try catching them and even fall down.
- Weak and dying grasshoppers serves as food to ants and predators, thus, completing the food web.
- Dead grasshoppers decompose and provide nutrients for the soil which is later used by plants. They help to ensure the continuous biotic function in the ecosystem.
- These are creatures created by our heavenly Father to make us happy and ensure life continuously keep going on well.
These are are some few reasons why grasshoppers are important to both humans and the ecosystem
A Little Story About Grasshoppers
When I was a kid still going to primary school, I usually went out with container along with my friends during break time to the school farm land (garden) in search of this grasshopper with carton color and black line at the back.
I named it "jet fighter" because it was the fastest and smartest grasshopper. I and my fellow hunter friends will time and aim at the grasshopper a few meters away or less and dive, only to catch the grass it was on. My friends usually cheered me up because I catch it more than dey do and eventually I became the leader of the grasshopper hunters group.
One sunny day, when the grasses grew very high among other weeds. I and my friends went hunting and saw a very big grasshopper, the size of a praying mantis and chased it till school over. As a government school, every staff meeting lasted till school over. Our bodies were itching us and we were very dirty. Yet, we still chased it till we caught it and pulled out it's hind sharp powerful legs. And also the colourful wings under first pair of wings.
We fed it with grass. It told them it's edible but as their leader they told me to try it first. I went home that day and roasted it nearly burnt and ate it. When I told them about the taste, other boys from other classes formed their own group and hunted for jet fighter. This lasted for two years until our set went into secondary school.
