Animal Activities #09
Hello everyone. I welcome you all to my blog about Animal activities brought to us by @xkool24. My animal activities is about Guinea pig
Guinea pig is a South American rodent from a domesticated specie. It has a robust body, large head and short limbs. It belongs to a family called Caviidae (Cavy). Its feet have short sharp claws and hairless soles. There are three toes of the hind feet and four in the forefeet.
Domesticated guinea pigs have different breeds grouped by their hair length and texture of coat. Their tail is not visible externally. They have crest of long hairs at the neck which varies from coarse, shirt, long, silky and smooth. Their coat has extreme colouration variable like cream, tan, white, combined pattern, black or reddish.
Guinea pigs eat vegetation and require water if their food is dry, but do not require water if their food is sufficiently moist. They live in areas with dense, tall vegetation that will hide them from being seen by predators. They have polygynous mating behaviour and in breeding season, they are monogamous in nature.
Guinea pigs life span ranges from 5-7 years, although some can live up to 12 years. They are herbivores in nature, mostly consuming grasses and ground level plants. They also serve as pret to birds, reptiles, and mammals, which they are very good source of food to environmental animals.
Economic importance of Guinea pig
For communities in Africa and South America, they serve guinea pigs as a good source of food and income too.
For medical topics, vaccines, nutritional study, guinea pigs are used in research laboratories.
Guinea pigs are a good sustainable food security for rural areas.
Ecological role of Guinea pig
Guinea pigs influence the composition of plant communities since they are herbivores in nature.
Other animals prey on guinea pigs are their source of food.
Other characteristics of Guinea pigs;
They are high in protein, vitamin B and linoleic acid.
Guineas pig have low cholesterol and saturated fat.
They are relatively easy to raise since they are small and bred all year round.
I invite @josepha, @meraindia and @saintkelvin17 to join this contest.
