Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #20

Greetings my dear friends of Steemit and Steem-Agro

What are the functions and roles of bird in agriculture?

Role of Birds in agroecology and agriculture

  1. Pest Control: As natural predators of pests like insects and rodents, birds help reduce the need for chemical pesticides, lowering costs and environmental impact.

  2. Pollination: Certain species, such as hummingbirds and sunbirds, are key pollinators, enhancing crop yields and quality.

  3. Seed Dispersal: Birds facilitate seed dispersal, promoting biodiversity and the regeneration of native plants.

  4. Nutrient Cycling: Their droppings enrich soil, supporting healthy plant growth and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

  5. Biodiversity and Ecosystem Health: A diverse bird population indicates a healthy ecosystem, essential for sustainable agriculture.

  6. Cultural and Economic Value: Birds can attract ecotourism, providing extra income for farmers and communities.

  7. Indicators of Environmental Health: Birds act as bioindicators, reflecting ecosystem health and the effects of agricultural practices.

What crops are most likely to be "birds" dependent, and why?

There are about 2,000 species of birds in the world that help bees with pollination too but let me back up what is pollination and why it is so important.

It's an important part of the process of new plant growth. The dust on the bees that is pollen in order for there to be new seeds to grow new plants and flowers need to trade pollen with each other when that pollen moves from plant to plant it's called pollination. The insects and animals that carry the pollen from one plant to another are called pollinators and plants need them to survive.

Honeysuckle and Scarlet gilia birds are most likely to help pollinate flowers and plants with bright bold blooms filled with sweet nectar but even though red flowers are their favorite. Birds need to eat all kinds of plants to stay healthy which means they visit lots of different plants spreading pollen everywhere they go.

The most common plants are papiya, banana and berries which depend on bird pollination.

How do birds contribute to global food security?

Tones of dangerous insects that reside as pests on crop plants are consumed by insectivorous birds

By feeding on mice, rats, moles, squirrels, hares, rabbits, and other rodents, some carnivorous birds, including hawks, owls, and eagles, shield the crops from harm.

Additionally, birds gather insect larvae that feed dangerous worms and eat plant leaves.

Birds are themselves a good food source of human. Many bird species are hunted for their meat and eggs.

Briefly discuss the economic value of birds' contri. bution to agriculture?

Cost and benefit analysis in agriculture ecosystem

It is hard to quantify the costs and benefits of bird activities in agriculture.

So there is a need for sustainable management approaches to manage cost benefit trade offs based the available understanding of interactions between species and agricultural ecosystems.
