Introduction to playing carrom

Carrom is a popular game that is played in many countries of the world including Bangladesh. Carrom is a type of tabletop game, usually played on a flat wooden board. Carrom is usually played by 2 or 4 players and the object of the game is to insert different colored stones or 'carrom pieces' (carrom balls) into the 'pockets' in each corner of the board.
Carrom game was invented in South Asia. However, it is not that there is no debate about it. Some say the game first started in Sri Lanka. Many say that Indians once spread the game to Sri Lanka. Many say in Portugal. However, it is believed that it was first played in the Indian subcontinent around 1890. When the game spread around the world after its discovery, it was played with different rules in different countries.
Bangladesh Carrom Federation was formed in 1990. Although carrom game is widespread and popular everywhere in Bangladesh, the reason why it is not successful at the international level may be because the game is played according to different rules at the grassroots level.
Carrom Board and Materials:
A carrom board is usually a straight wooden structure that is usually 70 cm in length and 70 cm in width. It has four corners where there are pockets. The board consists of 9 white, 9 black, 1 red or 'queen' called carrom pieces and 1 striker (special stone with which to hit stones), which is slightly larger in size.
Game Rules:
Carrom pieces are arranged in the middle of the board before the game starts. Usually, the white and black pieces are arranged specifically so that there is a queen between two white pieces and two black pieces. The player then takes the first shot with the striker.
With the striker, stones are pocketed in a straight line or in a straight single shot. The player who can first flow into a pocket between white or black pieces continues to collect stones of that color.
The queen or red stone is in the center of the board. To make it flow into the pocket, the player must also flow a white or black stone into the pocket at the same time.
The game ends when a player is able to pocket all the stones of his color (white or black) and the queen. The game can be divided into multiple rounds, with scores tallied at the end of each round.
Game Strategy:
Carrom is a strategic game. In this, the right shot selection and the skill of using the striker are very important. Players must flow the stones correctly into the pocket.
Besides, patience and focus play a lot of role in the game among the players. They have to think fast and use the right technique during every shot. Some special tricks of the game like "kicking" or "slipping" etc. where you try to pocket your own stones by moving the opponent's stones together.
