A Walk By The Canal

in Steem SEA5 days ago (edited)

Walking is one exercise highly recommended by doctors. It is a safe, low impact workout with a low risk of injuries and accidents. And the good thing is, walking does not require special training or equipment – except a pair of comfortable sneakers. You can walk at any time of the day, at a pace you are comfortable with. You can walk alone or with company.

In an effort to encourage Singaporeans to exercise, our government built parks, jogging and walk paths all over the island. There is a very nice path a couple of minutes away from my home complete with a machine selling sports drinks, a water station and toilet facilities.

The walk path runs along a canal which is home to fishes, turtles, and monitor lizards. On both sides of the path are plants to give shade. These evergreens are constantly in bloom, or laden with fruits.

Egrets and herons are a common sight at the canals. They stood patiently by the edge of the water waiting for fishes to come within reach.

Some photos from my walk.

An egret fishing. They are very sensitive things, and never allow people to go near them.

There are quite a few of these monitor lizards in the canal. Sometimes, they come on land to forage for food.

"When we walk, we coordinate movement of our arms, legs, and torso. Hundreds of calorie-burning muscles come into play – not only the muscles you'd expect, such as legs and arm muscles, but also internal muscles such as the psoas." - Frank Lipman & Mollie Doyle
