The construction of Faisal Mosque was initiated by Saudi King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Faisal bin Abdulaziz during his visit to Islamabad in 1966-1966. In 1969, an international competition was held in which 43 architects from 17 countries presented their designs. After four days of deliberations, the model presented by Vedat Daloke of Turkey was selected. The first model was criticized for being different from traditional mosque arches and domes. But the beautiful construction of a mosque at the foot of the Margalla Hills has silenced all critics.

The mosque covers an area of ​​5,000 square meters and can accommodate 300,000 worshipers at a time, including the outer perimeter. It is one of the largest mosques in the world and the largest in the subcontinent. Its architecture is modern, but at the same time represents traditional Arabic architecture consisting of a large minaret. Unlike traditional mosque designs, it has no dome and the main shrine, like a tent, is supported by four minarets. The minarets reflect Turkish architecture, which is thinner than ordinary minarets. Inside the mosque is a large electric lantern in the center, and the famous Pakistani calligrapher has inscribed Quranic verses on the walls with mosaics, which is a great masterpiece of calligraphy. Mosaic begins with the western wall where the word is written in Kofi script.
