Meugang Day Tradition

Soon the month of Ramadan will arrive, the month that the Islamic community has been waiting for. The arrival of the month of Ramadan makes it obligatory for every Muslim to fast, as commanded in the Al-Qur'an. In this case, there are several regions that welcome the month of Ramadan with various traditions. One of them is in Aceh where the "Meugang" tradition is held.

"Meugang" is a tradition in Aceh that has been carried out for years. Meugang is a special event for Muslims in Aceh, which is done when welcoming a special day for Muslims throughout the world. These activities are covered in several festival days such as the month of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, and Eid al-Adha.

In this tradition, many cows are slaughtered and their meat is sold. On that day, it was a special day because there were many choices of fresh beef which was not found in previous days. Meugang is usually held for 2 days before entering the month of Ramadan.

Local residents flock to buy meat which is then cooked with spices and served at the dinner table to be enjoyed with the family. One of them is that this meat will be cooked with "Masak Merah" which is a typical Acehnese cooking spice.

The holding of the "meugang" day can be said time to have fun to the fullest for the people of Aceh by eating meat, because The entire Muslim community will fast at a later date. The meugang tradition covers all corners of Aceh because the majority of the population of Aceh is Muslim.

The price of meat on meugang day increased by around 12,5% compared to previous days. Today the price of this meat is sold at 180,000 rupiah per kilogram (73,03 steem). Usually, people who are able will buy more meat than they need, and give it to the poor. This will help those in need.
