Is the death penalty really effective? |BATTLE MONTH |13
According to criminology, a criminal must be punished mentally, physically ot financially considering the nature of the crime. Among all the punishments physical ones are the most severe and the most severe physical punishment is the death penalty. In Sri Lanka, death penalty is assigned for two offences. Those are,
1.Culpable homicide amounting to murder
2.Possession of Heroin over 2 grams.
Every action has a reaction and punishments are the reactions gotten by criminals who do crimes. So, on one hand advantages for instance, giving the deserved punishments to the offenders and equity to the suffered party and vanishing the negative externalities left by criminals on society and the possibility of occuring future crimes can be gained by the death penalty.
On the other hand, blinding an eye to eye only leads to a world full of blinds according to Gandhi. "Are criminals not people? Don't they have human rights too?" are the questions asked by human rights organizations. It is hard to think that some criminals are afraid of death as they already know the fact that peole who got weapons will end up by weapons. Planning crimes while in prison is a famous secert. In America, states which implement the death penalty have the most crimes than states which don't.
My personal view is behind every crime there is a hidden reason such as poverty, love, hate, anger and lack of education. So what really needs is a huge attitude change. For now death penalty is enforced in 54 countries and If Sri Lanka is also about to enforce it someday, it is better to hold a referendum. What do you think?
Yes, I do totally agree with this statement.
This too. But the matter is how it should develop to the necessary level and did any government take any genuine initiatives in this regard. Also, parallelly we must reinforce our local law which will be able to treat all of us equally. Then there will be some control by all individuals.
A proper guidance and lectures must be given starting from home, school, university ,work places and medias.
Mathat thitha and some laws are there but the problem is inequality of implementing.
I think the right to life is a common right of everyone in this world. When a person is about to cause an accident or harm to another person, he or she may think of hitting the person causing the accident to escape. It can also be a severe thing. But at that time we have to be wise to get rid of that person. Not without instances where the death penalty is thought to be effective.

You have mentioned a good point right there✌️.
I do not approve of taking someone's life. It is legal to punish every crime. Good effort. Congratulations!
Exactly. Thank you for your opinion😊!

50% agreed. But we have seen so many example from society professors are rapes innocent girls and killed.
poverty is not point to sell drugs or take somebody life.
Love, hate, anger must not explode by end of murdered. So dead penalty have I think society will be well disciplined.

Actually yes. This must be edited as 'behind some crimes' because some criminals for instance serial killers and rapists enjoy doing crimes though they may be educated.
But poverty and drug trafficking have a link. That's the reason behind EI Chapo become a drug lord.
This is a good point for the Srilankans.
Thank you!😊
