How to Fix/Replace an Extension Cord Plug
It is not good to be using an extension that is faulty without a cord plug 🔌 at home, especially when there are children in your home because they might touch the wires by mistake, which we all know how generous electric shock can be. Extension cords can be damaged at any time, which the damage can be from pulling them out from the plug by the cord, dragging them along the ground, folding them, and so on.
If the extension cord is forcefully dragged out from where it is plugged, it can cause the wires to separate, or the outer jacket from the plug can be pulled out, thereby exposing the cord wires, which is dangerous. Once you have noticed any of these forms of damage on your extension cord, you should fix or replace the plug to be on the safer side.
As we have said, the only best repair is to fix or replace your extension cord if you observe any form of damage to protect wires from being out. In my case, I had to fix my extension cord to avoid exposing wires outside. In doing this, I get an old plug that I have kept for a long time and connect it to my extension, which I will be showing you how it is done.
Tools/Materials
- Screwdriver 🪛
- Wire cutter
- Replacing Plug
- Extension cord
Instructions
- Step 1: Cut off the old plug to replace it with the new plug if it is still available; if not, strip off the outer jacket of the wire.
Use a wire cutter to cut off the old plug from the damaged portion of the extension cord. To strip the outer jacket, cut it partially through the outer jacket of your extension cord. The cut should be more than 3 inches at least from the end of the cord. After cutting, then split the jacket using your fingernails and peel off the two sides from where you cut it.
- Step 2: Strip off the wire insulation.
The strip should be about 3/4 inch of the outer insulation.
- Step 3: Tie an Underwriter's knot
Some wires are two (positive and negative) whereas some are three. In this case, we have two wires (black and red) with neutral. Tie the neutral wire into an underwriter's to prevent the two wires from touching. Fold/bend the red and black wires a little.
- Step 4: Connect the Cord Wires

First, use a screwdriver 🪛 and loose the terminal screws on the plug. Now after doing this, wrap the black wire and fix it and tighten the screw to hold the wire strong. As for the red wire, connect it to the silver terminal using the same technique you use for the black wire and double-check your connection.
- Step 5: Secure the Plug
After you are done connecting the wires, then use a screwdriver and tighten the clamp of the plug on the cord to protect the wire from exposure outside. By doing so you can romance the extension cord or the plug without it shocking.
