Google will prevent those who reject climate change from earning via advertising
(CNN Business) Google grabs the potential of critics with climate change to monetize its platforms and disseminate inaccurate weather information through ads.
The company said on Thursday it would no longer allow advertising to stand aside from "content that contradicts existing scientific consensus about the existence and causes of climate change." Google (GOOG) will also block ads that deny the accuracy of climate change.
The policy, which comes into effect next month, applies to any content on YouTube and other Google platforms that addresses "climate change as fraud or scam," and denies that "greenhouse gas emissions or human activity contribute to climate change."
"We have heard directly from a growing number of our advertising partners and publishers who have expressed concern about advertising that is marginalized or promoting negative claims about climate change," Google said in a statement on Thursday.
"Advertisers just don't want their ads to appear next to this content. And publishers and creators don't want ads promoting these claims to appear on their pages or videos."
Major tech companies have faced increasing pressure in recent years to contribute significantly to the fight against climate change, including the act of combating false information related to the weather on their platforms. But as some major platforms have pointed out in the past, implementing policy consistently after promulgation is often the most challenging part.
Facebook last month announced its own effort to combat misinformation about the weather, including $ 1 million to fund the actual investigation of false weather claims.
Google also unveiled several products earlier this week to raise awareness of the weather, including a new setting on Google Maps that shows users the most eco-friendly route.
Looking forward to your responses : )

Many people live in a bubble!
Greetings @chesatochi, thank you for appreciating : )
really stupid of them. The major problem I have with this an any online censorship is that who gets to determine what is "rejecting climate change?" I would imagine it will be Google that does this.
I'd like to see more people step away from Google products and not necessarily because of this either.
