The best way to conserve our planet.

Huge companies such as the oil company Shell have benefited from investing hundreds of millions of dollars in reforestation initiatives, the Team Trees social media campaign that sought to plant a million trees got influencers and popular creators on YouTube to promote it.

There was so much propaganda that they obtained 1 million dollars from Elon Musk, I do not doubt that many of these campaigns and their donors had the best intentions but they caused the companies and countries that pollute the most to stop being pressured to reduce their emissions, plant trees where it should not cause more harm than good, if you try to convert a place that historically is a grassland into a forest, you will be destroying an established ecosystem, affecting the species that live in it and increasing the risk of fires.

Apart from the fact that maintaining a forest where there has never been one is very costly in terms of resources, it is not enough to massively plant small trees to plant them where they fit, many of these initiatives produced carbon credits that they sold to polluting companies, facilitating them with the famous Green washing or greenwashing making them look environmentally conscious while most of the saplings didn't even survive.

Reforestation of existing forests is not a simple thing; endemic species must be used, that is, they are native to that region, which means that they will be better adapted to the soil and climate and therefore have better chances of surviving. It must also be Avoid monoculture, that is, planting too many trees of a single species. Doing this increases the possibility of a disease affecting a large number of trees.

But more important than reforestation is the care of the forests that we have and curiously the solution is not something innovative, it has existed for many years, they are called protected areas, reserve areas or national parks, places where by means of a decree they are conserved and areas with ecological importance are cared for.

Rather than donating money to large-scale environmental campaigns that end up being used by polluting companies to clean up their image without reducing their emissions, I recommend getting involved in local projects. If there is a forest near where you live, help take care of it, participate in reforestation campaigns and Put out campfires if you are going to camp there.

Above all, it supports initiatives that legally protect them so that they do not end up urbanized.
