🎞️ Short Film Review – Juice (2017)
This short film "Juice" is directed by Neeraj Ghaywan and released under Royal Stag Barrel Select Large Short Films. This film brilliantly captures the unspoken struggles of women in our society. With a powerful, the film leaves a lasting impact on audiences and also on me.
Shefali Shah plays the protagonist of this film as Manju Singh. She is the heart and soul of this short film. In a middle-class Indian household, the story unfolds during a family gathering. While the men sit comfortably in the living space. They are engaged in discussions about politics and society, on the other hand, their wives are in the hot, suffocating kitchen, for preparing and serving their food. This stark contrast highlights the deeply ingrained gender imbalance. The kitchen was very hot and suffocating in between these circumstances they went on with their duties on the other hand the men were enjoying the air of cooler. This contrast highlights the deeply shows the gender imbalance in our society. Manju silently observes these and obeys her husband's constant demands one after one. In front of Manju, another family friend instructs her daughter to feed his brother first and then take her dinner whereas the siblings are at same age. This shows how girls are treated to sacrifice their priority for their family. Manju is continuously doing her duties in the kitchen almost showering by sweating but his husband keeps giving her orders one after one. This whole situation exhausts the protagonist and with a cold glass of juice in hand, she takes a bold step by sitting in front of the cooler among the man. This move is a powerful and deep meaningful statement against the gender roles in society.

A great film and this is not about the society you live in, this happens everywhere worldwide. Not too long ago this way of living was normal in the Netherlands as well and to many women it still is. They serve and give up on their dreams and wishes. Compromises should be made is said about a good marriage but the compromises are one sided (the other way round exists too where the man does all the work and the woman is served).
I have been there myself and the question arises next being with very old fashioned men is who is to blame this continues? Are these the men only? I don't think so since as long as women behave and let themselves treat like slaves they keep this alive and the worst I find the examples they give to their children!
I go for the woman who is without children and married out of love. She is right. There's is no guarantee a child will stay, it will not die or is willing to take care of you. Next to that children do not love a parent out of free choice but because they depend on that person. A woman only at home with one child will turn into a person with nothing else to talk about as changing diapers, grumpy, boring and no time for the husband who has more reason to complain and of course dumps the boring old wife who forgot how to smile and be his business card.
