Sphere or Spheroid? | Microsculpture in Chalk
Hello artists and fans. I hope you are well.
I had been mulling over the idea of how to bring sculpture to Steemit and this community for days. I mean sculptures made by ourselves, in our workshop, with blocks of some material that is easy to chisel and intervene, to “draw” in three dimensions, literally, (outside of digital, without detracting from that possibility in the near future)
I found the way!
Cleaning out some drawers in my desk, I stumbled upon a box of square bars of common white chalk, the kind we use at school, Ta daa…
I remembered that in my high school days, I spent some time sculpting on pieces of chalk, which I took from teachers, and with needles and hairpins, I killed boredom.
I left it a long time ago, and it was always a hobby, however, I see this as an interesting proposal to learn to sculpt a manageable material, expand our portfolio of artistic pieces and facilitate the photographic capture of said pieces.
For now, I will call them mini chalk sculptures, since they are miniature sculptures. Possibly, between all of us, we can give it another name. Without further ado.
I present my first piece after many years and a look at my mini-sculpture workshop.

What did you think?
It was a very relaxing experience, although I also realized that I need practice and to improve the finish. I didn't manage to build the sphere, but it is a spheroid.
Would you be interested in a mini chalk sculpture contest?

Our chalk looks different and so does the one (big and very soft) we call "stoep krijt" not only great to make drawings on the streets and walls but also to paint.
The minatures fit great in the "letterbak" (letter tray) or the tray they used to mold brick stones. I had one it was very popular in the 80s (attached to the wall filled with tiny sculptures - pretty expensive).
We made a mold out of gauze and wrapped gauze around this. A great technique but gios bandages are expensive by now and gauze alone is also quite expensive.
Paper maché remains 😁 It takes a long time to dry.
For years mujn children and I used it for Sinterklaas surprises - statues of cartoon characters. Later it became self-drying clay.
Plaster or concrete casting is also an option if you can make a mold or if you can work quickly and have patience you can build a statue with thicker plaster/concrete.
@grebmot @newton666 did you try something like this?
