Hello buddies... it is nice coming around again to pick up a word for the week. My chosen word for the week is FOREST. This is the biggest contributor to both human and planet health.

Overview of Forest & its Types

Each time the word forest is mentioned, it is pertinent we understand that it is an area that comes with a large proportion of trees, which plays an important role in the preservation of climate and ecosystem at large. This is the largest concentration where biodiversity is guaranteed while attending to human natural needs.

Forest has played a very crucial role in the preservation of our wildlife. Creatures that ordinarily would have been endangered and entered extinction are preserved in the forest zone. Creatures of diverse forms that include birds. Insects, plants, and other mammals find the forest as their safe homes.

In classifying forests, we have to take into consideration the types of trees found in them. The species commonly found there should predominantly define the forest type. This species type can be determined from the climatic environment and location. For example, we have the following forest types;

The tropical rainforest, just like the name implies, is known for the more rain characteristics that determine the biodiversity presence. It comes with the presence of more plants and animals in it because of the climate type of rain. It is greener in this type of forest which makes it more habitable for most animals.

The temperate forests with characteristics of distinct seasons. The behavior of the trees that shades its leaves in a particular season and blossoms at the other.

We have the boreal forests that are primarily found in the northern part of the globe and the mangrove forests found in the coastal regions. And of these come with their benefits that aid the existence of nature.

Significance of Forest

Forest has remained the major player in maintaining climate balance. The larger presence of green trees has made this a significant path in bringing balance to the ecosystem. The absorption of carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions and the release of oxygen have been symbolic of nature. It does bring control to the impact of rainfall effects on soils, and the prevention of the water cycle has been symbolic.

Forests have also played a significant role economically as they continue to provide timber, fuel, and other vital benefits. We cannot forget the medicinal benefits derived from tree backs and leaves which have been the mainstay of many pharmaceuticals.

Observed Challenges of Forests

We can continue to roll out more benefits and significance of the forest, but this comes with some threat factors if they are not well handled. Agricultural activities and other economic uses, like gains from timber sales, logging, and urbanization, have continued to pose threats to forests.

Deforestation has been a major challenge if not checked in this sector. This is piloted by human activities in the quest to earn personal gains but at the detriment of nature. Other climate change and wildfires during hot seasons also contribute to these limiting factors.

However, human-conscious activities like reforestation and afforestation have brought about a boost in ameliorating some of these threats.
We have situations where protected areas are established to help conserve nature and improve biodiversity, which reduces incidences of extinction.

In conclusion, forests have continued to play a vital role in the ecological and economic spaces, which are important in the existence of man and nature, as well as the planet. Biodiversity has been greatly preserved by conscious forest management, and incidences of extinction have reversed.
