INTRODUCTION
Education is a verifiable instrument of national development. It equips individuals with requisite skills and competence for improved meaning life and to contribute meaningfully to the society. For education to play vital role effectively in the socio-economic development process it must be accessible, affordable, and qualitative with network of schools spread far and wide across the length and breath of the state and country and with thousands, if not millions of schools, students and teachers, the educational system must be closely monitored, regulated and supported not only by the government but also by all relevant stakeholders to ensure qualitative education for all. This can only be done with the gathering of adequate and reliable data from the school system. The annual school census was therefore considered as an important nation wide strategy for the collection of relevant, reliable and comparable data from all schools in Nigeria or any country. The data indicators and information generated from school census can be used as the basis for policies, formulation, planning, management and informed decision making at various levels of educational administration. Besides, the useful feedback to school owners, managers and teachers for an improved educational system. Despite its importance and well-defined procedure, many school managers continue to find it difficult to complete the school census questionnaire effectively while others Merely play politics with it. This article therefore present the school census as an important instrument of administration.
