My Vision for Society – A Public Speaking Contest

Insecurities contribute negatively to national development. Without it, no community will make progress. Many people have died when their time has not yet arrived, so we need to be security conscious.

What is one major issue society faces today?

Insecurities are one of the major issues we face in any given country. The areas that are mostly affected are the northern part of Nigeria, where lives and property worth millions of naira were destroyed. Many farmers do not go to their farms because of banditry and Boko Haram disturb them, which makes them unable to do farm work. As a result of this, people will suffer, and poverty will also occur because it's the economic source of a family or country. The major reason why insecurity continues in the northern states is due to the unemployment rate, which lures youths to engage in these illicit activities.

Many citizens in Nigeria could not sleep effectively because their minds are not at peace when thieves break into their homes in the afternoon to steal their belongings. Boko Haram insurgents bomb churches and mosques with the aim of creating an Islamic state. Reports show that in Zamfara state, bandits kidnap students and take them to their hideout and demand millions of naira as ransom. Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) continue to create tension among people and attack security personnel.

What solution do you propose?

The solution to the problem we are facing includes the following:

• Security personnel must be equipped with advanced weapons so that they can use them to attack insurgency that disturbs peace of people. Most of our security personnel are using old weapons; some of these weapons are outdated in fighting against insurgency.

• Education is very important because it will enlighten people to develop ideas we can use to tackle these illicit activities created by Boko Haram, and banditry. Citizens must have full access to free education in order to contribute to the growth of a nation.

• Our criminal justice system must be addressed so that it will not continue to breed violence. Our law enforcement agency is weak to the extent that they will not be able to investigate cases. If the law enforcement agency is working the way we want, people will live peacefully without any problems.

• Police divisional posts must also be established in rural areas because most criminal activities take place in rural areas. Before the law enforcement agency could rescue the place, these people would have killed innocent souls. Local vigilantes must also be available to assist the police and other security forces in tackling this issue we are facing.

How can people work together to bring change?

We must work hand in hand to bring positive change in the society we find ourselves. This is a collective effort for everyone to find solutions to societal ills. We must be security conscious, knowing what is happening in the community, and report to the appropriate police station to arrest the suspect. Members of the community must employ local security personnel who will guard them from night till dawn. Doing this will protect members, and everyone will enjoy a better quality of life.

Members who live in the same environment must build a gate to serve as the main entrance for residents. The hours to close the gate at night and open in the morning must be posted so that everyone can be aware about the plan. In my culture, we don't tolerate nonsense; we are always on alert whenever we see strange things and will form a group to address security issues.
