The Nauka module finally corrected its orbit
(Roscosmos/Twitter)
The Nauka module successfully turned on the propulsion system and began to increase the altitude of its orbit.
Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, said they could turn on the engines of the spacecraft, this is also confirmed by independent observations using Doppler radar.
Nauka (Science in English) is the first new module of the ISS Russian Segment in 11 years.
Initially, it was planned to send it to the station back in 2007, but the launch date was repeatedly postponed, mainly due construction issues.
The launch of the module took place on July 21 and was initially carried out normally, but on July 22, Roscosmos discovered a problem in the fuel system.
According to N+1, membranes were damaged in the fuel system, which could potentially cause the module to run out of fuel to approach the ISS.
Later it turned out that the first activation of the engines to raise the orbit failed.
But now, Roscosmos reported that the module nevertheless activated the propulsion system and began to increase the altitude.
First, a test turn-on took place, which made it possible to understand that the engines are capable of operating normally, and then they were turned on again for a full-fledged orbit correction.
As a result of the maneuver, the perigee of the orbit increased from 190 to 245 kilometers.
Since the initial problems with the propulsion system were resolved, the specialists were able to set a date for the undocking of the Pirs module, for July 24.
The docking was initially supposed to take place on Friday, but the problems made it to be postponed.
Shortly before the official announcement from Roskosmos, the Dutch astronomer Cees Bassa, who works at the world's largest radio telescope, LOFAR, announced a probable orbit correction.
