What you know about tuberculosis?

Tuberculosis is a contagious infection which is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It affect mostly the lungs and some parts of the body.

Types of Tuberculosis
  • Pulmonary Tuberculosis
    This is the type that affects the lungs.

  • Extra pulmonary Tuberculosis
    It affects organs like brain, lymph nodes, joints e.t.c.

  • Latent Tuberculosis
    In this type, the infected person doesn't show the symptoms and it's not contagious.

  • Drug resistant
    This type are resistant to antibiotics used in treating Tuberculosis.

Symptoms of Tuberculosis
  • Difficulty in breaking
  • Constant weakness
  • Bloody sputum
  • Chest pain
  • Drastically weight loss.
Causes of Tuberculosis
  • Close contact
    Staying in close distance with an infected person is one of the easiest way of contracting it.

  • Immunocompromised people
    This set of people such as HIV/AIDS, Cancer and Diabetic patients are at high chances of contracting this infection because they Immune system is weak.

  • Poor living condition
    Staying in a poor ventilated place is also one of the ways of spreading it.

  • Poor diet
    Eating inadequate diet keeps one at risk of getting this infection

Transmission

It's an airborne infection which is transmitted through the air through droplets from an infected person from Coughing, talking, singing and Sneezing.

Diagnosis

It can be diagnosed by running diagnostic tests such as Sputum Smear Microscopy, Chest X-ray, IGRAs and skin test.

Prevalence

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) as of the year 2022, 10million people are living with Tuberculosis. The most cases are recorded in underdeveloped Countries such as
India, Pakistan Indonesia, Nigeria and the major factors that contributes to it includes.

  • Lack of access to good healthcare
  • poverty
  • Malnutrition
  • Poor living condition
  • High rate of HIV/AIDS
Incidence

This refers to the number of new cases of a disease recorded at a period of time in a particular place. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 10.6 million new cases were recorded in the year 2022 and about 6.3% are people living with HIV/AIDS.

prognosis.

Tuberculosis can be treated with the right medications but the success of the treatment depends on some factors like.

  • Type of TB
    Regular TB can be treated with drugs like antibiotics while some can be very hard to treat due to resistance.

  • Immunocompromised people
    People in this categories can be quite difficult to treat because of their weakened immune system.

  • Complete dosage
    Taking the treatment and medications serious is another step to getting cured properly.
