Tightening foreign investment controls not the answer to national security worries | East Asia Forum
Australia is one among the many countries that is screening and tightening foreign investments in the light of the emerging risks from technological advances and changes in the security space. Among these countries, there is a broad consensus in the type of investments that need to be tightened and screened but there is are differences in their approaches and procedures.
Any retroactive rules or procedures such as calling-in investments already made for reviews after a lengthy period of time is bound to have a chilling effect on the investors.
