California detected bird flu in raw milk sold at a store.
They are issuing a recall of the affected raw milk.
It was picked up in surveillance by Santa Clara Public Health Laboratory. California has been screening raw milk for bird flu.
In animal research, infected raw milk has a tremendous amount of the virus. Mice that ingested infected raw milk would get infected. Highest viral titers were in the lung, trachea, and nose.
Pasteurization inactivates the virus. So pasteurized milk is safe to consume.
