The Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt is by far the most famous and largest sphinx.

It depicts a reclining lion with a human head and was probably erected in the 4th dynasty during the reign of Chephren (around 2520 to 2494 BC, according to other sources 2570 to 2530 BC ).
