I quote the father of advertising David Ogilvy from his book 'Ogilvy on Advertisement' that "advertising is not an art form, it’s a medium for information, a message for a single purpose: to sell. When I write an advertisement, I don’t want you to tell me that you find it ‘creative.’ I want you to find it so interesting that you buy the product."
An advertising agency has the sole purpose to sell and deliver what their client needs, in the most creative and productive way. It creates, plans and manages all aspects of a client's advertising. Advertising agencies can specialize in specific areas, such as interactive advertising, or they can be a full-service agency that creates advertising materials like websites, online and social campaigns, brochures, catalogues, direct mail, print ads, radio and TV commercials, sales letters, and much more.
According to Management study guide, Advertising Agency is just like a tailor. How? Well, “The work of a tailor is to collect the raw material, find matching threads, cut the cloth in desired shape, finally stitch the cloth and deliver it to the customer.”Hence, we can possibly say that an advertising Agency is just like a tailor as it creates the ads, plans how, when and where it should be delivered and hands it over to the client.
A crucial aspect of an advertising agency is that they work independently and they do not have to be dependent on any one organisation as their work domain spreads over multiple organizations as their clients. The agencies put in ample amount of efforts for selling the product of the clients. For that they have a group of people having expertise in their particular fields, thus helping the companies or organizations to reach their target customer in a manageable and simple way.
The core mantra of an advertising agency to be a huge success is to be simply and extraordinarily 'be creative'. Agencies believe there is only one rule for advertising to be effective: "it has to be creative.” Even more than the visual presentation or wording, most agencies seek innovative ways to pass on the message(s) to consumers. Success comes when agencies are able to be creative enough to break through the targets’ mindset and ignite a brand relationship. Advertising agencies can either play it safe and risk losing the marketing war or can try to constantly come up with fresh ideas. As a matter of fact, David Ogilvy himself claimed that if an ad doesn't sell, it's not creative.
Use of creativity by agencies is "unexpected" because so much advertising today is expected. This will capture the attention of audiences, therefore the message is more likely to get through. There have been many advertisements that have surprised audiences because it was not normal for them to see that in an advertisement of that nature. The best use of creativity is when the agencies make consumers think about the product or brand and is able to leave a mark on people's mind which generates a higher recall value for that product or brand.
