My Actifit Report Card: April 26 2019

in #actifit6 years ago

Today was a rainy day so I didn’t get out for a pre-work walk this morning but I did manage just to make my daily 10K goal.
I thought I would share a recent panorama shot I did and talk about something I touched on in replies to some comments on my post yesterday about my fear of cable cars

Pano from Hudson Point park

In my Wednesday walk post last week I shared some shots from Hunters Point Park here

For this post I will only add one photo from Hunters Point, Looking across the East River at Manhattan

This photo is about 27 Photos taken in RAW and merged together in Lightroom into the pano, and then edited.
It was a lovely morning when I visited the park, and the view across the water was beautiful, the sun has just risen and you can see it reflecting off some of the buildings.

If your ever across in Long Island City I would recommend a visit to this park its a nice park, with a good area for walking and cool views

Now you may be wondering how this shot could relate in anyway to my fear of cable cars?

Its not because this view in the far right if you look really close you may see the 59th Street bridge which is beside the Cable Car to Roosevelt Island, but because of the Contrails from aircraft in the sky over Manhattan.

In the reply to a couple of comments I said what’s weird is my Fear of cable cars but after my experiences with flying and close calls i have never had a fear of flying, so let me expand on that a little.

Three times I have been booked on Aircraft, 2 Commercial flights and one Helicopter flight on a mission, and due to things changing I had to either cancel the trip or make other plans and was not on those flights and the three flights crashed, killing all onboard. To tell the story of each of them would make this post into a novel so I will just touch on one of them to give some context.
I was booked with my Boss on a helicopter flight in a mission and about half an hour before the flight was scheduled to take off some VIPS booked on the flight ad we got dropped, so we instead jumped in our vehicle and started the drive to our destination, which is about a 3 and a half hour drive, we didn’t inform anyone in our office that we were driving, so there was a panic in the office when the reports of the helicopter crash started coming out, the first we knew about it was when we started receiving calls over the Radio System we had and wondered why suddenly people were asking if we were OK.

How did I deal with this close call, my boss was shocked when as soon as we heard how bad the crash was and that their was no survivors the first thing I did was to call a friend in the Movement Control Section on the radio and ask to be on the first Helicopter flight available once flights were cleared to go again, it didn’t matter to where I just felt I needed to get on a fight and not let this freak me out, So a few days later I was on a short Helicopter flight the first one in fact after the crash of the other Helicopter.

The other change I made after these three experiences including commercial flight is I never told family or friends which flight I was on after family and friends thought i was on a Swiss Air flight that crashed flying out of NY, but my flights were changed at the last minute to an Italian air flight when it happened and out of connection soI didn’t know about it till landing in Rome and turning my Phone back on to find i had so many missed calls and text messages from people. From then I never tell people which flight I am on, which isn't a problem these days since for health reasons I do not fly anymore.

But the weird thing is after these experiences I never have had a fear of flying like I did with cable cars, and I am not sure why, perhaps its becauseI actually saw the cable car crash in person and did not see the others.

I have been truly lucky i can say and fate has been good to me, and let finish off with the chorus of a song that is perhaps relevant by Doris Day

Que será, será
Whatever will be, will be
The future's not ours to see
Que será, será
What will be, will be

Holy Cow. 3 times? That's just amazing.

I've spent some time close to the edge, but always because I put myself there. I can't even imagine being that close and then again. And again. I don't even know what to say.

I do not know how to say what I want to say-that may come later. But for now, a heartfelt 'I'm just damn glad you are here' will have to do. Holy Cow.

I think this explains why I say often Fate has been on my side, and I am not sure what anyone could say, I have been unbelievably lucky.
I am glad that with the time difference my Kids never heard about the Swiss air flight crash until after I called and woke them up to tell them I wasn't on it, as I had told them the day before that was the flight I was going on, I would have hated to have put them through that.

PS thanks I think so far you are the only one I know for sure read the whole post, other comment shave been like Nice pano LOL

Sometimes it is just better that way right (the not telling them which flight)? I tell you what though, if I were you, I would buy a lottery ticket every day because you definitely have some strange luck going on!

Hello @tattoodjay
City looks beautiful from far away. Beautiful view my friend.
10k is good number..

Thanks weekdays I try to hit 10K every day, on weekends I am a bit of a slacker

Great photo.

Glad you achieve your daily goal.

Thanks I was glad I make it on the weekends I am a bit slack though so I may not meet my goal till Monday

Hmmm... stay away from flying and also cable cars. Who needs them? My 2 cents. The panorama is beautiful. This view is amazing from whatever angle you look at it. East River or Hudson River. Also, I recently downloaded the Actifit app on my iPhone, I want to track my steps too. I don’t know how to post on steemit yet, will figure out. 😊

LOl I flew so many times after these incidents, but now for health reasons I cannot fly anymore and although I do miss it sometimes I am kind of glad my flying days are over as well if that makes sense, I used to do overseas trips at least 4 to 6 times a year and it did get tiring

The actifit App is good it is a little tricky working out to post from it the first time but then its easy

I have no past experience with cable cars even close to what you've described. But I don't like them either, and even though there is no logical sense to it ... I avoid them. They don't have the same heart-pounding, edge-of-death issues as say, bungee-jumping or ziplining (which I won't do either!!) I'm not especially bothered by glass elevators outside of buildings, or heights per se. So ... I don't understand it.

Those rope bridges slung across chasms in South America are kind of in the same league. I don't think I'd cross those either. (I've never considered myself a wuss -- but after this post, I may have to rethink that.)

Since 9/11 I pretty much avoid high-rise buildings, too. I look down from many flights up -- and think of what it must have been like for those doomed people to stand in a similar place and realize they had two choices. To burn to death ... or step out into space. When your choices come down to that ... OMG. I hope there's Karma somewhere in the future for the people who did this ... and I don't think it was all "the Muslims" ... IYKWIM.

I don't fly any more for some of the same reasons. I used to enjoy flying -- and really enjoy the sensation of speed at take-off and landing. But even before 9/11 I would look around before the flight doors closed and think to myself, "Are these really the people I want to die with?" It stopped being a joke after a while.

Now flying is so uncomfortable, such a hassle, so intrusive and awful ... @catweasel and I have decided -- we don't need to go anywhere that much if there's an airplane involved. If we can't drive there ... too bad. It's not on our list any more. I'm much more comfortable with those choices than with the alternative.

Que sera, sera is certainly true on some level. But so is ... To Each His Own. (So I'll close this comment with "Dueling Song Titles." I'm glad you made it through and are still here. Keep doing that.)

My Wife is like you she doesn't like Heights at all thought, and she doesn't do cable car or many of the things you mentioned, and also does not like going up high in buildings more so since 911 as well me I am or I should say perhaps a bit of a thrill Seeker, I did many Zip lines over the years, and the rope bridges and such I enjoyed, but Bungee Jumping is something I just could never do, I think because it relied on the skill of the person hooking up the rope and I felt uneasy with that
I used to fly a lot for my Work about 4 to 6 international trip each year and I used to enjoy it so much but that many trips and often to places not on most peoples wish lists to visit did get tiring, so even though sometime si miss the traveling, for the most part, I am glad that I cannot fly anymore,

To each his own is another great song, a real classic for the original, but I did love Willy Nelson's version of it in the 80s
I am pleased with myself that I rode the cable car, but now I can tick that of and never need to do it again

Wow. This is crazy. You are like a cat with 9 lives. Hehe, or more.
I would be terrified to fly after all those stories that happened. It seems like you like to face your challenges and fears, which is a great way to live.

That makes sense and probably is true why you are afraid of the cable cars and not the flying. I mean it is a terrible thing to see these kinds of accidents and they really can put some fear in us.

Yes Fate has been kind to me I must say, funny thing is I suspect now that I have not flown for about 5 years I wonder if my nerves would kick in now.
I had not really thought about why till I did this post yesterday and I think that is really the case why, but I have ridden one now and thats enough for me LOL
