A puzzle: What's going on here?

in #blockchain-metrics2 years ago (edited)

Here's a 3-day drop in rewards from 31K in daily curation-reward distribution to 17K, then to about 14/15K?

I've seen single day dips before, and they usually happened a week after website service disruptions. However, I don't think I've seen anything sustained like this since I started tracking it, last June.

The data is from here. Is this a data problem from steemdb.io, or are the numbers correct? If correct, any guesses about what's causing it? (I probably won't have time to dig further until this weekend)

I checked a bunch of high-powered voters, and they don't all show the same decline, but some do. For example, we see a similar dip if we look at the curation rewards for @upvu:

Even though, there was no dip in voting a week ago (the voting dip looks like today, and I suspect that it's just because steemdb is behind in refreshing...):

Same with @rme (curation, voting).

I assume that the rewards will return to their usual level around 30K, but I'm curious about the cause. Was there some sort of disruption that I'm unaware of last Wednesday and Thursday? Behavior change by a high-powered voter? Removal of large delegation(s) somewhere? Something else?

We also see the same dip in the #bursteem25 beneficiary rewards:

One thing to note is that I don't know how far behind SteemDB is, so today's numbers might not be complete, but I definitely think it's going to finish up on the low side.

Any thoughts?

Sort:

I think it is a steemdb.io issue.
I consulted my favourite data pool ;-) (https://steemworld.org/rewards-info):

Example upvu:

datecuration steemdb.iocuration steemworld.org
2023-03-095.1 MV10.8 MV
2023-03-085.9 MV10.6 MV
2023-03-077.5 MV10.5 MV
2023-03-0610.7 MV10.7 MV
2023-03-0511.9 MV11.9 MV
2023-03-0410.5 MV10.5 MV

I think it's pretty clear. Since 7 March, the numbers no longer match.
Unfortunately, I have no information on how steemdb.io gets the data, so I have no guess as to what might have gone wrong.

May be the problem in steemdb. Whenever their information of curation rewards drops, the notable problem started.

I don't think their is any other problem. If so, total platform would be affected.

I think it could be what you say update, the truth is if I don't read your post I don't realize

the truth is if I don't read your post I don't realize

Right. And I assume it'll bounce back. It just has me curious, since I happened to notice.

I also have no idea about the exact reason conjugation. An agreement has been reached to reduce the inflation rate. (Witnesses)
Delegation withdrawal does not matter. because the prize pool is fixed.

The prize pool isn't really fixed. I don't understand the exact rules in play, but we have seen after previous hard forks that the rewards settle into a sort of equilibrium based upon the volume of posting and voting.

I think @moecki confirmed the reason for the decline here, but in principle, I think that the rewards pool might be impacted during the time when delegations are locked up, pending return to the delegator.

It's an interesting fact... and probably possible if many delegations are removed.

But in this case, it is rather not the reason. rme, for example, had no incoming delegation. And there would have to have been a lot of delegations to explain the decline.

Yeah, I agree that it's definitely not the case here, and it would have to be a huge delegation. I see a similar difference with the burn statistics from the API vs. burn statistics from steemdb.io, so in this case, I'm confident that there's something funny going on with steemdb.io.

(Incidentally, with your link to steemworld, I was able to discover an unrelated problem with my PowerBI report for burned statistics, so thank you for that. I'm working on redoing some of those visualizations, so between that and the steemdb.io problems, I guess I won't have a burned token report for this week.)

It is very hard to find out such things. But I think if there is any problem in blockchain, total platform face problem, but this not happened. May be the main problem is in the site from where you collect information.

I think it's a technical glitch. And I also noticed dips in voting when the price of steem falls, then the remuneration changes in a smaller direction. Hence, all other resulting bonuses also change in price. I hope I explained it clearly.
