Ecotrain QOTW - Why do you think there is so much hate and anger toward Vegans, and why are those who eat meat and dairy so threatened by the notion of giving it up?

in #ecotrain6 years ago

This is something that I have witnessed in my own home and family. Well I would not say actually that there was hatred but yes there was ample amount of criticism and sarcastic attitude.

Around 3 years back suddenly one fine day my Son who was 19 then decided to go Vegan. When he informed this to me, I was very much surprised and taken back because he was such a big foodie that he would do anything for food. Meat and Seafood is something his meal would not complete without it. So when he informed this to me I was in a state of shock and could not believe it. I thought it must be again one of those age related spur out which would fizz out soon. He gave me this heads up in the month of Dec and said I will start from the month of Jan. He sounded very serious and I have never discouraged him to do anything. He has always had my support in whatever he has wanted to do so I decided that I will support him in whatever way I can. In those days I was shuffling between India and Muscat very often so we decided we will get a good Tiffin service for him who will serve him a variety of Vegan food and healthy stuff. We did enough of search and luckily found a good Tiffin service for his Vegan diet. So his journey began. I was shocked looking at his will power, because for that young a age and so much fond of food this was a very big decision.

The challenges we started facing was when we were meeting up our family members. There were many sarcastic comments that were made like, Ohh now what is this new drama and all. My family members also used to tell me, take care of him he may get on to a wrong line, and I was like excuse me, what are you talking. There was a lot of criticism he had to face. Most of the time people use to make mockery about this shift of his. And then there were many friends who also supported him which was one good thing. But most of time if we would meet the same people second time they would pass comments like, Is the drama of Vegan still on or have you shifted back to your normal. Of course the only thing we would do is ignore and laugh it out.

I could relate with my Son when he made this decision. When I was very young one day I had gone with my father to a Beef Market and the scene over there left me so much disturbed and from that very day I stopped eating beef and pork and till date I do not and now not even my husband and son. I have not yet been able to give up on Chicken and occasionally Lamb meat. I am not trying very hard to do that but somewhere at the back of my mind I want to. I go vegetarian completely on some days of the week.

The only problem I see with the Vegan diet is that it creates a lot of vitamin deficiency, so when you start it you also need to start with some supplements that can keep your body healthy. In my son's case it was the same that happened he lost lot of weight and started getting weak so he decided to shift again back to some meat diet again. I feel when a body is used to a certain type of diet right from the time of birth and then if you make a shift it needs to be a very balanced one else it can create problems to your health.

In India because there are many who already follow Vegetarian diet, being Vegan is not a very big deal, it more than boils down to the level of your own family and social group which was the case in my Son. He followed the diet for a year exactly and then he again started eating some meat, which I was ok with, but here people too had a problem. So there were some sidey comments like, see we told you, all this is just age related drama and people used to make fun.

Thankfully in my family we are all non-dairy people. My husband has just a cup of tea in the morning, which we are now going in for Goat Milk and that's it, otherwise me and my son we are completely off dairy. I would eat a piece of Cheese once in a way.

All these are lifestyle changes that we can make for a healthy life and yes for the sake of the animals who are not vocal and cannot say, please stop killing us. Though honestly my family has not been able to give up on meat completely but we have minimized the consumption, we are going in for Free range eggs and also look for meat without hormones, preferably grass fed and wild caught fish. Though I know I cannot still justify the consumption. Our mind and body is greatly influenced by the food we eat not only health wise but also in our thought process and behavior. The emotions that animals carry at the time of death do get passed onto in our body when we have that meat. We can see by ourselves how the number of diseases have increased in the last 20 years, Cancer, Autoimmune disorders, Hypothyroidism and so many have all become common. If not for the animals we can think for our own health and take conscious decisions as to what gets into our body.

When I crossed from Lahore to Amritsar in 1992 and saw all those flies on the meat in the market there, I became a vegetarian for the first time in my life (for hygienic reasons).
It was also very easy to be a vegetarian in India because of the great vegetarian tradition there (much easier than being a vegetarian in Germany at that time).
After about 10 months I moved on to Thailand and started eating meat again.
Then in 2004 I joined a Yoga Ashram in Germany and became a vegetarian again, from one day to the next, and have been a vegetarian ever since. Never had any health issues related to that diet, but since I am quite sloppy and lazy with my diet, I do not want to become a vegan, because as a vegan you have to be quite conscientious with your diet so you don´t lack any important nutrients.
I feel that with dairy and eggs I get around that necessity.

That's true those dairy products are the building blocks that we have since birth.

That's true Vegan diet creates a lot of vitamin deficiency. When you live in that type of atmosphere it becomes easier for the body also to adopt. Here in Middle East region the influence of Non veg is high and it gets difficult to follow and also I have still not had that very strong urge of giving it up. I can imagine how difficult it must be to practice it in European region, but I feel now in the west people are making conscious decisions about diet and many are going veg, also when you go out you have options. I remember in late 90s when I used to travel to switzerland often diet was the biggest challenge for me

Oh that is so hard when the sarcasm and critisizm is coming from your family.
Being a mother we always want what is best for our children.
Did you ever get a chance to talk to your son about why he chose to go Vegan?
Glad you could support him and that when he saw negative effects he changed his diet again.
What is a Tiffin service?
Is that someone who came and bought his meals?
Never heard of it before.

Yes, we use to have some very intense discussions on this. He was going through a lot of change in this time, reading a lot on conspiracy theories and majorly on the health path, how it is impacting the quality of life. Also he was an excessive junk foodie, he wanted to put his will power to test, so culminating it all he too this decision.
A tiffin service is a meal provider as per your requirements. We have it very common in India. Specially people who are working make use of it due to lack of time to cook.

It looks like your son had his head on straight, doing research and having the determination to make a change! good for him!
That's a wonderful service to have people cater to you needs. Is it very expensive?

very nice that you support your SOn in his choices.. that is a beautiful thing and I respect you fully for it.. My family would laugh at me, and my mother would never make anything special for me on family meals and would encourage me to eat meat.. very sad really!

so cudos to you, as far as im concerned reduction is VERY important.. and eating less meat makes a huge difference..

Thank you. He is very special to me and all his wishes are my command...hehehe.

LOL, drama :D It is funny how people think that change is a drama :D I was a vegetarian for 3 years when I was younger and I was lucky just as your son to have a loving mother who supported me and cooked and prepared meals for me. You are a great mom, who cares about those drama sayers, much love! 💚

Thank you my dear. I believe that if you forcefully try to stop them doing what they want to then all the more their curiousness will increase. It's good to experiment whatever you desire in life

Well quite a sensitive topic to write on. I have seen other posts too by a vegan lover...and its was kind of war about vegan and non vegan on steem Blockchain.
This subject is entirely new to me and get to know only here..

Hehehe, this is a sensitive topic, everyone wants to defend their own lifestyle. I feel each one will adapt to what suits them best.

Being vegan is good but vegans must not push it with other people since not everyone can give up meat and it annoys other people especially if they are being judged in eating meat or making them feel bad for eating meat. @nainaztengra

That's true, be it whatever your preferences are, one must respect other's choices

oh, I know this problem!
I felt the same!
I am not 100% vegan, but I changed my ration greatly and add much greenery, vegetables and fruits to it and start to eat less animal products, much less. My family was in great shock! It's extraordinary for my little city, and actually people say it's just impossible to be healthy vegan in cold Russia with its climate.
I heard so many jokes, so much sarcasm or simply criticism...every day! we quarreled and argued much, I protected my choice, but I was blamed that I feed my little son in such a way...it was hell...now it's better, they are used to think it's my choice, and I have a right to have my own opinion, but still there is no support and no understanding...

That's quite ridiculous the way people behave. It is personal choice be it whatever, if they not wish to follow it is their choice but one must respect other's preferences at the same time.
As per your climate, i can understand vegan diet may not go very well due to extreme cold.

good hope for not meat consumption excessive, because it will many arise disease, prevent more good, before suffer from, I enjoyed the article, @nainaztengra,☺️
