The Coldest Morning
A bitter cold Wisconsin morning!
Frost on the windows
The water bubbling out of the ground that forms the spring pond in my yard is warm enough that it never freezes, even when it is ridiculously cold outside.
The ducks love the open, and comparatively warm water of the pond. When it is this cold there's often a haze above the water.
The foggy air around the spring creates frost on the tree branches.
I am getting tired of attempting to take photos through the window and am looking forward to the warmer weather that is predicted for the weekend!

So, have you been getting the supercold temperatures that they apparently have been getting in the Chicago area? Flash frostbite temperatures? I mean if the ducks are able to be out in it, things must be relatively warmer than that, right? I certainly hope so. I'd hate to think anyone would have to endure such weather for any length of time.
We've been having unseasonably drier weather, and with it, warmer than normal. It's been bouncing between the 40s and 50s with mostly sunny skies. So, I know we were supposed to have a somewhat less severe winter this year, but so far, we've been getting closer to late Autumn or early Spring weather, sans the rain. Not that I'm complaining. I'm just waiting for it all to build up to the point where it's raining in apocalyptic proportions. :)
We do have snow in the forecast, for next Monday and then the following Saturday, but I'll believe it when I see it. It's far enough out still that things can change, and really, we end up with traces up to a couple of inches for the most part. One year we got around a foot in one storm. That's the exception, though, and it pretty much melts off within the next day or so.
My son lives and works in Chicago and they closed his office for two days. The city was pretty much shut down. I'm a hundred miles further north and it was even colder here. Schools have been closed all week we haven't had mail delivery for the past 2 days. It has just been ridiculously cold. But it is all coming to an end! Check out my hot water challenge post about what happens when you throw a cup full of hot water up into the air when the temperature is -27 degrees below zero! Now the forecast is for it to warm back up and start snowing again.
It's amazing how it has to "warm up" to snow. :)
Okay, so it's been worse up there. So this because of something happening off the Great Lakes, or is it coming down from Canada/Arctic Circle?
Heading over to see the hot water vaporize. :)
It was a cold front/polar Vortex dipping down from the Arctic. It really is hard to believe it can get so cold that your nose freezes shut with just one breath of outside air.
Thanks, luv!
Jack frost on the windows. Always reminds me of the old house we had in Minneapolis, it had old wood double hung windows that I loved but they would get ice build up on the inside during the winter.
I was trying to remember if I've ever seen frost on my windows before. The house is extremely well insulated and the windows are not that old. I think it must have just been because of the extreme cold. It was only on the windows on the north side of the house, too.
I'm sure your windows are much better. Didn't mean anything haha. That house was built in the 40s. We eventually replaced all the windows.
Oh, I didn't mean to sound like I took offense! I was just trying to recall if I had actually ever seen frost on these windows before. If there has been I don't remember it and think it only happened because of the extreme difference in temperature from indoors to outside.
Ccool to have a spring so close. Reminds me of the japaneae monkeys that chill out in hot sprungs in winter :)
Those monkeys are living the good life! This water is very consistent in temperature, and in the summertime it provides a cooling effect in this area of the woods. The canopy of leaves on the trees trap in the cooler air and it's never as hot at my house as it is in surrounding areas.
Everything looks really cold. The first picture is great.
Thanks, I love the patterns that frost creates. Once we make it through today it will begin to warm up.
If it is a very beautiful part of the snow
It happens when it is really cold outside and the moisture inside the house condenses and freezes on the glass of the windows. It is always so interesting to see the patterns. I always think it looks like a little gardens.
It's true they look like small, beautiful gardens. Thank you for your beautiful pictures
How strange the little pond did not freeze. A happiness for water birds.
It never freezes. The water coming out of the ground is around 10C. It provides drinking water for a lot of creatures all winter long.
Thermal water! So close to your home.
What a great yard. If I had this yard I would spend more time at the pond then in front of a TV :-)
I do! I love being outdoors!
Gosh! I don’t think I could live in that environment! Just too cold for me!
Keep warm and safe!

you make winter look so beautiful, I to am looking forward to some warmer weather on the weekend
Even if it brings more snow, just having a civilized temperature again will be so wonderful!
Yes indeed I am thinking that and I have it lucky compared to you there
You. Had some cold weather there too, from what I saw. Just not quite as Extreme as this was. It really was pure craziness. It's - 6 right now and it's snowing. Funny the things that you can be grateful for.
Right now its 14 and no snow we have got hardly any snow so far this year just one good fall in October, not that I am complaining
I'm actually glad we finally got the snow. We went most of the winter without any either and I was tired of all the brown and dead-looking stuff. At least the snow makes it more interesting, even if everything is in black and white!
Yes thats true snow can be so beautiful I wouldn't mind a nice snowfall before winter packs its bags and move son out
The mist coming off that spring is pretty. The poor ducks, though! They'd better stay in the water or their legs will become popsickles! That frost in the window is pretty, too,but the cold was just nasty. You could probably have a lot of fun with a good macro lens where the mist is freezing. What was the coldest it got out your way?
I had to go into work this morning at -28ºF and, driving in, all the manhole covers and curb drains were billowing steam. I wish I had brought my camera and had time for a few photos.
We were about the same as you. I think I saw - 27 on my phone just before dawn. .You had classes? Everything here was shut down, even mail delivery!
I have a good macro lens, but quit using that camera when I got this wifi compatible Powershot. I recently bought a WiFi SD card for the Lumix but have not been able to figure out how to format it so that it works with the app. I think I need one of my grandkids.
I see there's a new full frame Lumix they just released... Very spendy, though! Good luck with the card. Let me know how it works, too. I still use CF cards, because my camera is about ten years old. Maybe there's a WiFi card that would work with it.
I just don't get what I'm doing wrong but it will probably end up being something simple. I use a Chromebook these days and it's really inconvenient to get out my old laptop just for photos. It would be so nice if I could just download them directly into an app. My Lumix is probably 5 years old by now. It's a sweet camera and I feel bad about not using it.
