VENOM review and Inktober inspired artwork!

in #art6 years ago (edited)

Alright, Steemit/@dtube! I’m weighing in on VENOM, the new anti-hero Sony film directed by Ruben Fleischer, starring Tom Hardy. As most of you know, I don’t typically spend time with movie reviews. I am an apologetic comic book fanboy […and I’ll get in to why that was important with seeing the film to begin with]. I feel especially motivated to no only write a Steemit/@dtube review, but to vicariously live through my fellow Steemians participating in daily #inktober posts. That is something I can’t do […again], but I thought the companion inking of Eddie Brock would be a nice twilight to the #inktober that could have been.

First, the film. Let me say, I’m shocked this movie was even green lit, honestly. The messy arrangement between Disney and Sony regarding Spider-man and the cohabiting sub-characters and villains. It just seemed too complicated. On the other hard, maybe Sony just felt that if they were going to hold those rights, they may as well do something with them. The timelines/universe are confusing. It leaves us asking questions as to where Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock fits in with the current MCU. With all the pre-Tom Halland Spider-man reboots and disasters, though, what’s the worst that could happen?

When rumblings of this film first began in 2017, I was cautiously optimistic. This was a character I wanted to see brought to life since my adolescent years, before big superhero blockbusters were even a thing. I’m not alone in that. Venom, Spidey and Carnage were a significant step in bringing me from a casual comic reader, to a diehard loyalist that would beg my parents to take me to Phoenix Comics in Edwardsville, PA, to buy the next issue in the Maximum Carnage series. It was the first arc I’d painstakingly bought in it’s entirety. Venom will always have a special place in my heart.

Sony attached to this film made me a little nauseous, but Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock did reassure me…until, the first trailer was released. Tom Hardy not withstanding, it looked bad. That was followed by the news that it would be rated PG-13. Another blow to my hopes of Venom being done any justice. The second trailer didn’t make me feel any better. “Eyes, lungs, pancreas. So many sacks, so little time.” What….the fuck? I picked up tickets for me, @vermillionfox, @guthrie and @ bryanpolitte, more out of a moral comic book lover obligation, but I had the lowest of expectations. Maybe that was a good thing.

I won’t be giving any spoilers, so you can read on. I was pleasantly surprised. VENOM was much better than I thought. It held up. Decent, plausible plot […as far as film interpretations of comic books go]. First act had a nice slow set up […but not boring enough that a 7 year old @guthrie was frigidity and asking to leave]. Great climax and resolution of characters, including Eddie and Venom, which was really the foundation of this film. Tom Hardy was able to [almost] single handedly support the entire movie. Not only as a believable Eddie Brock, but a likable [….and that’s SO important to get right] Venom.

Reading some interviews with Tom Hardy, I long for what could have been. When asked by Comics Explained what his favorite parts of the film were, he responded “…the ones that aren’t in it”. Maybe we’ll get to see those in a director’s cut. Interestingly, though, there seems to be a tale of two movies. Reviews are relentlessly cruel, and I can honestly say, that was not my experience. Maybe just the nostalgia of seeing a live action […pretty well handled] Venom allowed me to forgive the shortcomings, but if that’s the case, I’m not alone. Check out this column by Karlton Jahmal of HotNewHipHop.com titled Movie Goers Rank "Venom" Exponentially Higher Than Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score.

I left the theater […especially after the post credits] more excited for what is to come than ever. @guthrie left asking me questions about Venom’s origin and relationship to Spider-man, and @vermillionfox and @bryanpolitte, at the very least, seemed entertained. It almost feels like we’re seeing a MCU hardfork because this was a successful extension of the Marvel characters we know and love. Harsh critics aside, RottenTomatoes.com just announced VENOM BREAKS RECORDS IN MONSTER DEBUT! , proving once again that critics are pretentious, out of touch dicks.

#inktober is upon us and I’m sad and regretful that I couldn’t participate. I’m so behind on photography, it would be morally irresponsible to commit to a drawing a day. I’ve been living vicariously through Steemit artists like @scrawly, @veryspider, @yanes94 and my very own @vermillionfox, as they share their daily inkings. I decided, after being so impressed with VENOM, and reminded of my teenage love for the character, to do a one day #inktober sketch of Eddie Brock, being taken by the Venom symbiote. Done in Procreate, using the 12.9” iPad Pro and Apple Pencil.

That's a nice styled vision you put down on that piece of paper 😁! Heard Venom was out, but haven't got the time yet to visit it in theatre. Excited!

Great and honest review. I think critics hate this movie because it is up against A Star is Born, seriously. I am no one is saying that venom is an Oscar movie, but a good time at the cinema. I'm hoping to watch soon.
Also the drawing is so awesome!

I heard Lady Gaga fans went on a Twitter campaign to hate on Venom specifically for that reason. It was entertaining and that's all I wanted. I really needed a decently executed Venom after the third in the original franchise. This was much better, and Tom Hardly drug it over the finish line for the parts that were lacking. Let me know what you think when you see it @readingdanvers!

I heard about the Lady Gaga fans and I think it totally sucks. So I saw the movie last night and I really liked it. I didn't watch the third Spider-Man movie. I did watch the first and second at the cinema when they came out and I don't know why I didn't watch the third. Then I heard how bad it is and decided to actively skip it whenever it's on tv. Tom Hardy is just an amazing actor, really. Every scene that he was in, I loved it. Also that post credit scene that teases the sequal just looked amazing! The only thing I really didn't like is the choice to have all the action scenes at night because it doesn't look good with the black suit, I could barely understand what I'm looking at in the finale battle scene. Also, the script had some holes in it, but all in all it was an enjoyable movie. The people I went to see it with also like it and I watched the movie at a 22:00 screening after being awake since 05:00 and the movie was engaging enough that I didn't feel tired throughout at all.

This is so amazing! If only you had time for #inktober! You make our little daubs and drips cower in comparison :)

I really love your pencil and sketch work. There is something so satisfying about filling in the black. I start with sketches too and when I streamline it down to black line and white page, it is so Zen.

Now, let's see if I can keep it up with upcoming travel etc, we'll see.

I hope you get another chance to do one. Maybe one a week? A girl can dream, can't she? :)

Ohhhhhhh, @donnadavisart, you are too kind. I really wish I could be doing this the entire month, but even the few days I've taken off to work on this and the horror comic, I've already gotten angry texts from some of my photo clients wanting to know where their images are. I just can't get a break. It's so stressful.

I feel for you, it is a busy time. Maybe one day you'll have more comic time and less photo time, though you are so good at photography let's hope there is always some of that :)

wow! so excellent work! It´s amazing! I am eager to wath the new movie

Thanks so much, @jessiearias! It was pretty good. Way better than I anticipated. Welcome to Steemit!

Excellent work

Thanks very much, @dobartim! It was a pleasant surprise to be motivated to draw one of my longtime favorite characters.

You are very talented and I believe you can make a world-wide career.

Your take on Venom is definitely awesome. Haven't seen the film yet, but think I'll get to it this week. Wonderful drawing

Thank you, @safesigma. Thanks for reading it.

Wow it is incredible to see the process of your drawing, I am really impressed, it has many details and the contrast is incredible, the heroes are good but the villains or antieheroes as they call me more attention. Lamentably I have not been able to see the movie since the cinema is something scarce here, heheheh.
Critics are often wrong because they usually say, they say that everything will be bad and practically a person does not see that it is not like that until he sees the movie, because if it were for them everything will be terrible.
I think one can say something, but not degrade something without knowing how it will be!
On the other hand it is sad that you can not participate in Inktober, I would have loved to see your good drawing, but the work comes first, hopefully you finish before the end of the month, to be able to enjoy them.
Yes, you are right there are many doing the daily drawings and they are very good😍😍, I always see them. I told @vermillionfox that I would harass her this month 😁 to see her drawings that I love.😍😍

The critics were wrong @yanes94. I mean, this thing isn't going to be winning academy awards any time soon, but it was entertaining and it's broke records for an opening weekend in October. I'm really glad @vermillionfox is participating in #inktober. I wish I could so I'm living vicariously through her. Hey! How's the tablet working out for you?

Generally I do not pay attention to the critics, they always make mistakes.
I hope some day I can see the movie and know how it is.
it's good that you live the #inktober with ellla since you can not @kommienezuspadt
Well yes, @vermillionfox has a great imagination, I like it! 😍
The tablet, well that's a pitched battle hehee alone that she's winning! I still do not get used to not seeing the paper but it works well, the bad one is me! my lineart is very ugly hehehhe
For my situation at the moment and the #inktober almost can not use it, because I have to do the daily drawing and rather publish up to twice to see if I get out of all the debts fast.
I've only used it 2 times since I bought it! the first drawing you saw it, I am still learning how to use PS's hardware and all that, it takes up to 3 or 4 days doing the digital drawing and because of the inktober, so now I can not use it.
I recently made my second digital drawing for a pet contest so I decided to do it that way, only that there is something that does not convince me maybe it looks like very blurred or something like that I do not know what brush should I use just I'm experimenting.
Is there any technique to not last so long?
Please, if you can take a look and tell me what I could have, I would appreciate it very much

I read that the film did not achieve the impact that others expected in fact from 1 to 10 give it a 3 and I think that is a very low score perhaps the bad reviews are due to those fans who follow the plot from the comic and this movie was not enough For them but at least there are those who like the movie!

It actually made a ton of money and broke all kinds of records @gvand! That didn't come out until after the opening weekend, but the critic hate didn't seem to stop it from making money.

Your line drawings always fascinate me, that richness and confident lines amaze me. For me that is what i call great drawing, show what you can do with lines only. Great one @kommienezuspadt. it's real shame you don't have more time for drawing.

Thank you @jungwatercolor! I'm still working on controlling my line weight and strokes. I watch a lot of Sandra Hope on YouTube. She inks a lot of DC comics. Her shit is incredible. I would love to be able to do what she does.

Thank you for Sandra Hope @kommienezuspadt , saw videos and I know exactly what you are talking about. She is a wizard with brush and ink. Sometimes when I see someone so skilled I ask myself what am I doing :)))

Your venom is awesome and I hope you'll find more time to squeeze art for Inktober <3.

Thanks @scrawly! I do, too. I definitely can't do every day but when I can.
