Is going wide a good idea for erotica?

in #writing7 years ago

I don't have any numbers to back this up. Wait, yes I do! Check this out:

So that is my earnings for the day. Rec Center Backdoor is about 200 pages, so someone got through most of it, and the other books are either one or two people getting through those. I guess that is pretty good for a midweek erotica day. You can see that it amounts to $1.40. Not that much money. If only one person bought a book i'd make more money than all that reading combined.

That is the peril of short books in KU; each read doesn't earn you that much money.

If you're not a good author, and you're not explicitly hitting a set kink, then no one is going to read you either because there is porn, videos, free books, comics, so many other things to capture your time and effort why read a good long book?

This is why authors go romance; the readers stick around for the long book, they delve into the story and the characters and they read or buy the 50,000 word book. They get 1,000,000 page reads in a month and make 70,000.

At some point, I'm going to leave erotica. It is a training tool to get better at writing, and making clearer prose.

I'm considering putting all my books wide now, and not doing KU ever again. I'm in it for the cash and the slow burn, earning money every day from past effort.

With my books wide I'll do something with PATREON or some other way and offer a personal KU experience. I'm leaning on like a lifetime membership of $50.00 for all of my books now and going forward delivered through Book Funnel (so you can put it on any device). That means I'm going to have to create some sort of reader magnet, or some sort of net to catch new readers with and draw them in to my long form personal stories and website. Will you buy the unlimited everything to own all of my books for $50.00? A one time fee that gives you all books now, and all future books?

I expect if you like my writing, you like my prose, my sexy stories and the way I write then you'll be down for that. If not then you'll see all my books on whatever digital bookstore you frequent.

I published my latest book on Kindle, Smashwords (strange place), Draft2Digital, yesterday.

The easiest was Kindle, second Draft2Digital, last was Smashwords. Kindle makes it soooooooo easy to publish. It is no wonder they're number 1. Their buying experience is amazing too. I'm totally impressed with then, but I don't want to be beholden to amazon with how capricious and annoying they are with perma "publishing" books, their refusal to put anything by my name in Romance, and how if you're exclusive to amazon for your bread and butter, you're hosed when they decide to randomly put you in the ADULT dungeon. What the fuck?

My best selling books somehow end up in the adult dungeon after they climb through the ranks and plummet in sales. Like abysmally plummet jumping off a cliff and die in a splatter of red goo and saggy skin.

With all that frustration comes hope for a better future. I'm hopeful, really that I'm writing consistently like 7 months now, pumping out books with regular pace, about once a week, and I've made about $178.00 over the last 90 days on Kindle Unlimted and amazon.

That isn't terrible for an aggressive returning author. Not phenomenal at all, but not terrible. I was hoping to make at least $1000 a month. More books in the grinder to get that niche, "backdoor brat and neighbor" down.

On that note, check out an excerpt from today's writing!

It helped she was no prude worried about how she looked and favored deep cutting shirts showing her cleavage as much as she like flaunting her ass with high shorts, rompers, and skirts. My cock was hard for her constantly, and after our night at the fountain, we’d begun exploring public sex with gusto. Whenever the mood struck us during a date we’d smile at each other with a knowing glint, and scurry off to the first semi-private place to pound into whatever ready hole she offered. I’d bring her to orgasm before either blasting in her ass, her mouth, or over the ground. Sometimes I ate her pussy, others I braved the risk of tonguing her butthole. She sucked my dick like a teenager comfortable with putting in the effort naivete to still enjoy it.

I wish I could shower some pearls of wisdom onto you but the truth is that you are miles ahead of me in the writing world. but I will end up following you, to keep updated on your blog and writings and maybe I will pick something up along the way.

Thank you for the kind words. I don't know about miles ahead. I've simply slogged my way forward.
The funny thing is that I feel like im' miles behind even shitty writers on KU. They claim they're making gobs of money but all the "top" erotica on KU sucks. Like, is bad. I hate reading it; good for some scenarios, but full of trite banal stereotypes that don't stimulate or interest me at all.

So i feel way behind them!

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I'm sure there will be free, affordable, and high quality stuff from me in the future. I like the KU idea, and want to have a following on my website as well.

I have posted a few of my stories on here but they were met with hollow echoes and empty replies. and that's ok, I am aware of how many people are on this platform and how a post can be lost in the moment to other more well-known writers. So I will keep on writing because it will only ensure more practice and better stories.

I have read a few unknown authors on KU and, yeah, some of them are stinkers. I try to remember the even the greats (Stephen King, Ray Bradbury, insert your favorite author here) have had more rejects and bad writing then you have yet to write. and they all ended up finding their voice and making an impact in the world, and they all, at one point, thought that their writing sucked. So who do you like to read?
