The Intruder... Artistic comment on rigid social traditions... (contest)

(English translation below)

This work of the Dutch artist Gabriël Metsu who lived in the mid 1600's blew me away. At first I couldn't even look at his painting. To see the raw truth of existence glorified was too glaring. I was accustomed to seeing scenes that portrayed almost an imaginary existence. The harshness of life toned down. This artist shattered that. I actually couldn't sleep all night at what I had seen in his work and seem to be walking around inside one of his paintings. Harshness and imperfections glaring all around me.
What a loss that Gabriel Metsu passed away at such an early age, only thirty-eight. Perhaps he had some premonition of an early demise and that is why he painted up a storm, 133 paintings.
There is a self portrait... enjoying in a tavern with his wife. He looks very jolly indeed.
In this painting entitled "The Intruder" (1661) I can only "try" to understand what he was showing.
The young man at the door forcing his way into the room is related to the central figure The woman in her night clothes stepping out of bed. Perhaps he is a nephew or even a grandson. The lady on the left at the vanity with the mirror and makeup is a servant as is the lady at the door trying to bar the young man from entering.
The central figure, the woman in nightclothes, is in the upper class of society. From what I understand social behavior in the Netherlands at the time was very restrictive and rigid. The young man in his exuberance is disregarding all social customs by trying to get into the room while the woman is still not dressed and before being attended to by her servants.
The young man, who is a close relative, is excited about something that has just happened. Perhaps he has been promoted or a proposal of marriage has been accepted. Something like that along with his youthfulness makes him so excited that he bursts into the room and transgresses social customs.
We get the idea that the artist liked to challenge this social rigidity and was inclined to spontaneity (emotions) in social interactions. It was fun for him to embarrass the upper class woman his painting with an intruder.

Thank you for presenting these contests. I appreciate having to go deeper into what the artist might be trying to express. I still feel like I am walking around in one of m\Metsu's paintings. I may be stuck with that for a while.
Un abrazo.
