My Trusty Method To Combat Low Steem Prices - Steem Thrifting!

Well, for any "old hands" on Steemit we have certainly seen a rollercoaster of Steem price valuations. This time is no different. But don't despair, it will rise again like it always has.

Anyways, during the low price points I have developed a method to keep the income coming in. Go thrifting and blog about that instead!

This way I am bring in some nice money and staying active on Steemit, but my content creation effort is already paid for by the thrifting. It has always worked for me, and maybe this method will interest you.

Oh, and it doesn't have to be thrifting, just do what you like to anyways and then share it with us here on Steemit.

I hit up the local Goodwill Outlet where I can purchase items by weight. They charge just 89 cents per pound of "Goods." Clothing is $1.49 per pound.

I really enjoy the treasure hunting aspect of it all as everything is just dumped into bins and you have to go rummaging around to find anything. You never know what you might find.

Nothing spectacular was found today, but it was worth my time. Some of the better items are:

  • Vintage Apple Mouse Pad
  • Mortal Kombat for PS3
  • Electric Paintball Hopper
  • Nu Skin Recovery Fluid
  • Two bottles of Fragrance Oils
  • Argus Slide PreViewer
  • University Level Spanish Text Audio CD set
  • 3X Braun Electric Toothbrushes (will sell as "for parts")
  • iRobot Roomba 550 (not pictured, "for parts")
  • And, of course, SILVER!

There was a monogrammed tray, a tiny souvenir spoon, a napkin holder, and a pie slice server.

I saw this stuff in the bin and thought it would just be silver plated crap, but I still had to check. To my surprise, the back on the tray said "STERLING"!

I checked the spoon and it was marked "800." That means it is 80% silver.

The napkin holder only has "8665" marked on it, but I think that just might be the design number. My gut tells me that it has a good chance of being more than just plated, so I bought it as well.

The pie slice server is plated, but in good condition and I will just clean it up and use it myself. I did find out that it was made in 1936 so I am happy to save a bit of history as well.

Speaking of history, the maker's mark of the tray is from the Webster Company from North Attleboro, MA.

If the napkin holder is sterling silver, then I found 110 grams worth.

Knock off 10 grams for the 800 spoon and make it an even 100 grams of sterling and we get a scrap value of:

I paid $13.34 for everything today, and some things aren't even pictured as they were toys and books for my kids.

Oh, and $15 silver is crazy! These are firesale prices - load up!

That's amazing

It's always nice to leave the store richer than you were walking in.

Nice finds. It seems like you would need to know what to look for, but you seem to have really good luck (or skill) at finding things of value.

Oh, it is just a skill that anyone can learn. I mean, all this stuff is sitting in the bins and I was certainly not the first to go through it all.

So it's mainly a matter of learning what people are buying and what you can reasonably make some money off of. You buy what you can and then see how it goes. What's your carrier of choice? Do you use one type of container (eg envelope, box, flat-rate) or do you vary it?

So this is another benefit of the Steem price being down then @getonthetrain - we get to see more of your thrifting . 😊

I hit up the local Goodwill Outlet where I can purchase items by weight.

Does that mean you just go around, chose what you like, they weigh it and you pay. No matter what it is?

Is that quite common in The States?

Yes, you pay based on weight. You can also get special prices on certain items. Like a vacuum cleaner will only be $3.99. Big items have a set price - they have things like furniture sometimes. If you find stuff that is heavy, you can make a deal too. I have had one item cost $20 by weight but I asked for a deal and they sold it for $9.99.

It's not too common. The Goodwill Outlet is a special place where unsold items get one last chance before being shipped off to who knows where. It used to be China before this stupid trade war stuff started up.

You make me want to drive to a good will outlet. Mine are just filled with overpriced toys and new clothing from brands no one has ever heard of.

Are you going to do another month challenge?

Not a month, but I will go every day for the rest of this week and the next and then show what I picked up. If anything sells, I will also say as much.

Heck, I am still selling stuff that I picked up from that original month!

The Goodwill near me sends jewelry to a local jeweler. I never once found a silver stamp. I’ll have to keep my eye open.

Employees are just (low paid) people, sometimes they miss stuff. You never know.

Gosh @getonthetrain I hope one day I can learn about Silver and Gold....................

lol! You big kidder.

Awesome - I wish this would be my homepage for Steemit when I log in.

I wish this as well... :D
